Without retention it’s a non-starter obviously, but Flames will need to retain some if it if they really want to get it off the books….Domi is not being paid to be a centre they want him on the wing ideally - was great with Matthews last year

Generally I would agree with you but in this specific case, how many years are we going to bang our heads against the wall with the same result? We’re going to give Marner $14 million for 8 years and run it all back in perpetuity? At least show something in the playoffs to earn the payday.

Calling his bluff = if he wants to stay in his home town and the centre of the hockey universe, he’ll take a reasonable deal. If not, he walks and we re-allocate the cap space. I’m ok with that. If he is amazing in the playoffs and the Leafs make a big run, then I’m happy to pay him what we wants.

You’re not wrong, but they’ve never actually forced his hand to see if he’d take less. They’ve always capitulated. I think it’s worth calling his bluff in this case, unless he’ll take a team friendly deal now (super unlikely).

The show is June 12th but Father’s Day is the 15th, am I missing something?
