We laugh about Carpenter being in his weed and video games era (and good for him) but there are very good reasons he might have gotten sick of the industry. It screwed him over repeatedly and even though he eventually got his genre flowers, he is still obscenely underrated as a serious filmmaker.
Just thinking about how THE THING came within shouting distance of ending John Carpenter's career.

accurate
the best gay book for spooky season is The Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal by KJ Charles, which opens with the sexiest ghost story imaginable, and improbably turns into a gorgeous multidecade love story (with lots of ghosts and monsters)

Man alive, I just saw that Robert Irwin dancing with the stars clip.

Today is a rollercoaster.

The tragic sadness of losing Jane Goodall.

The whoaaaa MAMA of Robert Irwin's dance performance.

We're gonna be ok, wildlife people. We're gonna be ok. Idk how. But we will be ok.

A lot of people outside Canada want to watch Heated Rivalry, which is awesome, but the producers can’t just, like, put it in other countries. Media outlets in other countries need to pick up the show, so the thing to do is tell your favourite streamer to get the show!❤️

this whole piece is deeply worth reading and sharing, especially with the centrist dems and liberals in your life, but this penultimate graf really sums it up. you just can't play these kinds of games with people's lives.

Esther and Delaney turned in a masterpiece here. The entire history of the meat packing industry is a vivid example but much of the story is analogous to ICE raids and labor shortages today in many industries
A lot has changed in meat packing since Upton Sinclair released The Jungle, but the industry is still dangerous and it still relies on our most vulnerable populations.

And *this* is linked to a terror and rage at the possibility that their children, which are their property, do not conform to their expectations. A sick cultural dominance game driving every aspect of the Western conservative movement..
Even down to how they exploit the changes in diagnostic criteria to suggest there's some "contagion" or "epidemic." What those changes actually point to is a move away from a model of suppression to a model of acceptance, and that's what actually terrifies them
i have to say, as a trans journalist who has covered the "trans debate" for about a decade now, there is no daylight between how the trump administration and conservatives lie about tylenol and autism and how they've lied about youth trans care.
