"Waymos don’t have human drivers, they’re devoid of humanity,” she said. Destroyed robot taxis are “symbolic of the attempts, throughout the history of this country, by the tech industry to strip us of community.” www.bloodinthemachine.com/p/the-weapon...

We had a great Canadian Design Studies class today, discussing a very (limited) history of Service Design, as exemplified in Canadian wheat/dairy/livestock Pools and Federated Co-ops. (image from: everettbakerslides.smugmug.com/Photography/...)

I didn't actually know about the restrictive IP laws brought about by fair trade. This is throttling Canada's right to repair, our right to jailbreak devices, our right to modify/adapt devices. www.policyalternatives.ca/news-researc... #Canada

Not one but TWO pairs of blue herons building nests at Hastings duck pond late this afternoon. So amazing to watch.

This 1949 memo from the T. Eaton Company archives, at the beginning of Canada's Good Design Movement, is still timely. When they refer to "foreign exchange" they are referring to the tariffs the US still had in place in 1949

Canadians - I have cloud storage on google and apple, which I think I should move. Are there any Canadian-based cloud storage places I should be looking at? #canadasky

It feels like there has never been a better time to examine Canada's Good Design movement and its economic/socio-political raison d'être.

If you saw Mark Carney on The Daily Show and are interested in how he sees the world economically, listen to the 2020 Reith Lectures from BBC: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

This week, my husband rediscovered a few old photos that were given to him by a family friend about 20 years ago. I had a look and lo and behold: Andrew King posters in the wild! Hiding in the foreground.

On this day in 1924, Yvonne Brill was born in Winnipeg.
She invented the Electrothermal Hydrazine Thruster, which today keeps satellites in orbit.
Her work revolutionized rocket science and changed humanity's future in space.
Let's learn about her :)

I had the pleasure of working with Joe on Vancouver Opera posters.... in 1998! An entire career ago. He was a kind, courageous, and creative man. What an icon.

I'm working on my Canadian Design History syllabus. In my other survey course, I explain how Vancouver was clear-cut, part of False Creek filled in with earth removed from "the cut", Sumas Lake filled in, etc as ways to intently manipulate/design natural elements.

Honestly, about 15 years ago I thought the freighters were going overboard with foghorns. I could hear them going off day and night. And then I discovered I had a horrible inner ear infection.
Foghorns have staged a coup in Vancouver

May as well dive right in.

Did you know that dogs in ancient Mesopotamia also refused to drop the ball?

According to a Sumerian proverb, “The dog understands ‘Take it!’ It does not understand ‘Put it down!’”

I'm not sure how many design history profs are here, but I could use some feedback. I am putting together a dhis lecture on design and consumer capitalism as a follow up to my consumer culture lecture (which typically ends in the 20th century).

I’m at a point in my research where I need to have more extensive conversations about this recurring issue in Canadian Design History.

The last tweet I authored, from 2023: Almost 100 years ago, the City of Vancouver Engineering department enjoyed their 2nd Annual Dinner, where they gave toasts and enjoyed a meal presented to them in a menu as information design. I'm in love with this crazy thing.
