All of this is fascism. And not early stage either. This is the embedding of the Right Wing Daily Mail press consensus as the absolutely unshakable common sense of the UK state. Made possible because the "left wing" party has abdicated any kind of moral position on it.
this is really grim

Extremely thorough analysis of the BBC's distorted coverage of Israel's genocide in Gaza by @trillingual.bsky.social

The piece is very well sourced, fair, nuanced, sympathetic to institutional pressures on the BBC - making the verdict on its biased output all the more damning.

To explain briefly: at the moment people successful in their asylum claims get permission to stay in the UK for 5 years, then have to apply for permanent residency. At that point a review of their status is done, but it’s rare not to succeed at that point unless they‘ve committed an offence 1/
To reiterate, this is about making life immeasurably more miserable and stressful for some of the most vulnerable people, in the almost certainly vain hope of winning over the votes of racists.

Anything more shabby and shameful is difficult to envisage.

Erm, no. No this policy does not need "clarification". It needs condemnation. They have been pretty clear what they want, the mass deportation of people living and working here, families ripped apart, and xenophobia and racism embedded further as government policy

Vile stuff. At my own university all new staff are employed via a subsidiary company to avoid the TPS pension (remember: pensions are pay) and we all fear the costing staff will be next. Management think staff are so desperate that they’ll accept anything.

Remember: university managements are so…

Palestinians will feel understandable relief. The West should feel nothing but shame. Gaza has been obliterated. The territory rendered uninhabitable. Tens of thousands murdered in cold blood. The entire population subjected to starvation tactics. And now, colonial subjugation under Trump and Blair

Irony being that the entire Farage-isation of British politics is built on the phenomenon of white right-wingers who don't want to "integrate" with the reality of multi-ethnic Britain, don't want to accept migrants as their fellow citizens, and don't want people of colour moving into their street.
Wow. Robert Jenrick doubles down by branding a black journalist's questions "ridiculous" and saying that the problem is not his comments, but "journalists like you who pop up and try to knock me down", adding that "this is the reason why terrorist attacks happen". ~AA

I mean it wasn't founded for this, that's the thing liberal institutions *tell themselves* to smooth over their actual role of doing propaganda for the state. What's changed in the last decade is that the balance of imperatives has changed more towards "smash the left at all costs".
BBC News seem suicidally bent on ignoring political parties with many more MPs, more rational policies and more supporters than Reform. Suicidal because one of the first things Reform would do should they ever get near real power is defund and throttle the BBC, founded to be impartial and unbiased.
Reform UK, which has a grand total of four MPs, was just given an uninterrupted platform for an hour and a half on the BBC and Sky News channels, in order to talk about its plans for mass deportations

When was the last time the Greens (with four MPs) or the Lib Dems (with 72) were given the same?

By contrast a Norfolk Labour MP, Clive Lewis, was expressly advised by police NOT to attend counter-protests at an asylum hotel in his constituency as he could "cause a flashpoint".

Must be that two-tier thingy the far-right kern on banging on about
Robert Jenrick, the Tory Shadow Justice Secretary and former Home Office Minister, joining protesters outside an asylum hotel is one of the most disgusting acts by a frontline British politician in living memory.

In addition to basically serving as genocide apologia - because this is what this is, and make no mistakes - they also put it under the topic of 'Israel and Antisemitism.' They believe that fighting antisemitism means denying a genocide, and this makes everything more dangerous for Jews as well.
I’m kind of speechless with this one. I can’t imagine the kind of person who continues to make the argument that it doesn’t count as real starvation if the kids were already sick.

Is there any explanation for how we went from half of parliament and the whole national press up in arms - roaring that even a suspicion of racism is utterly unacceptable and those accused must be destroyed - to shrugs and awkward coughs as the main parties fight to do Enoch Powell speeches loudest.

"controversial or unpopular opinions" is such a stupid phrase to include in a piece of legislation relating to academic free speech. because it encompasses both "hard truths that people don't want to accept" and "things that have in fact been proven incorrect numerous times by research".
I am not a lawyer, so please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I can tell the new legislation in place to protect 'free speech' prohibits any university from censuring any professor from dedicating class time to promulgating misogyny, racism, transphobia, homophobia, antisemitism,

What a vile individual. This is low even for him. You don’t use recognising Palestine - or anywhere else - as a *threat* to another country. You either have a sincere conviction that statehood is valid and deserved or you don’t. Unless of course you are a hollow vessel with no convictions at all.

So the reward offered to Israel merely for *partial* compliance with international law is that the UK will continue to deny recognition to a Palestinian state? This is the great Peace Plan that Starmer has served up?
NEW: UK govt says it will recognise Palestine as a state in September unless Israel takes "substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, reaches a ceasefire, makes clear there will be no annexation in the West Bank, and commits to a long-term peace process" to deliver a 2 state solution
