about 2 days later update, still smells not-great but moreso in the "strong vinegar" direction versus "something died" direction. hoping it will continue to offgass bc i would love to use it for more stuff 👍

big downside of vinegaroon/iron gall ink is that it smells BAD due to component parts: iron & vinegar. it smells like rancid blood, to be honest. Did a quick baking soda soak which helped a lil, am now letting it rest overnight sitting next to a dish of baking soda hoping that helps more

Made a little keychain thingy to practice tooling bc my hands were bored during a meeting today :3 still using the screwdriver but hey it works. then i oiled her and gave her a 30 second soak in THE SUBSTANCE. she came out beautiful

the color isnt showing super accurate in photography, but the quick dip is a really beautiful slate grey, and the 30 second dip is this gorgeous deep blue-black. Gonna let it cook more and maybe do a better set of swatches tomorrow

Last thing to make for him is the bone buckets themselves...I got the wire and the fabric, so now just have to whip up the pattern and make a dummy cover for both so it looks like theyre full of bones
December 11, 2024 at 7:42 AM
Another reason I decided to do stitching vs rivets is just frankly bc again, it wouldn't match the bones.

im tired so am probably forgetting steps BUT it's DONE ‼️ it can hold weight, is comfortable, and most importantly: i have once again created a cosplay item that is very difficult to store.
December 11, 2024 at 7:41 AM
i never want to stitch anything ever again (<- total lie) bc it looks cool and is strong but the TIME

ended up doing a lockstitch (1 needle, tail end acting as the bobbin) by hand for attaching the chest strap, bc trying to manage the shape of it all w 2 needles made me crazy
December 11, 2024 at 7:35 AM
Last thing was the chest strap. I didnt want a buckle bc it wouldnt match the rest, AND it wouldn't match my Harrow who will be wearing the ribcage I made. I wanted all the bones to match.

Also I messed up punching the holes on the chest strap, was able to pivot the mistake into stitch details.

never let me stitch three 8oz layers of leather again this made my forearms cramp SO bad even with the use of pliers. BUT on the upside: it fucks
December 11, 2024 at 7:30 AM
Ok so i realized I didnt get the correct steel wool. Got this "Rodent Barrier Kit" steel wool last night for like $4, and it is immediately working better, you can see the chemical reaction in the bubbles.

also like this is 8oz leather (3 mm ish, 6mm when double layered) so if i was doing anything lighter it would also be faster. tragically thick leather is simply better. to me.

this took me a bit over 2 hours. pricking irons would probably change the whole game im ngl because im doing all this by hand w an awl. however. i do not want to buy another thing <- guy w a crafting tool problem

anyway. bones are painted. only thing left is sewing. sewing the initial X was awful on my fingers, but since then i got a pack of john james 1/0 leather needles & did some sewing on another leather project. it is a NIGHT AND DAY difference from the big eye embroidery needles I was using before

like i dunno if you look close you can still see some variation but im baffled how this just. fixed it. and the only reason i decided to use resolene on the grian side to begin w, is when i redyed it i used SO MUCH dye I was jhst buffing it and buffing it and the dye was still bleeding out
December 9, 2024 at 7:52 AM
Resolene is an acrylic topcoat sealant, that seals in dye but it's acrylic. it's plastic, and it changes the texture. so I only planned to use it on the flesh (underside) side, i didnt WANT to yse it on the grain (outside) side. Cut to now, am sealing it all up and it fucking. fixed. the dye issue?
December 9, 2024 at 7:50 AM
anyway. Redyed the ENTURE thing, bc when i asked for advice people said it could be i didnt do enough coats. but everything was same as before: perfect until 1 day after dye dried, and then weird brown splotches throughout the black dye. So I gave up, buffed it, and resolved to apply resolene
December 9, 2024 at 7:48 AM
Ok didnt update for a bit bc i hit a frustrating road block of my DYE being uneven and splotchy. Did test swatches, no issue. Got new dye, same issue. Pic #1 shows it, but it's worse IRL. I redyed the ENTIRE thing, which sucked bc i had already sewn it into an x shape. My apartment is tiny so like

i love photography..... imagine me, on the floor on my back holding a crunch position, completley stradling my friend who is contorting her body so only her arm is raised, and my partner in front of us holding a sustained squat. who needs the gym when u have POV arm pics to take

🤝 yeah
