Made a little keychain thingy to practice tooling bc my hands were bored during a meeting today :3 still using the screwdriver but hey it works. then i oiled her and gave her a 30 second soak in THE SUBSTANCE. she came out beautiful

the color isnt showing super accurate in photography, but the quick dip is a really beautiful slate grey, and the 30 second dip is this gorgeous deep blue-black. Gonna let it cook more and maybe do a better set of swatches tomorrow

Another reason I decided to do stitching vs rivets is just frankly bc again, it wouldn't match the bones.

im tired so am probably forgetting steps BUT it's DONE ‼️ it can hold weight, is comfortable, and most importantly: i have once again created a cosplay item that is very difficult to store.
December 11, 2024 at 7:41 AM
Last thing was the chest strap. I didnt want a buckle bc it wouldnt match the rest, AND it wouldn't match my Harrow who will be wearing the ribcage I made. I wanted all the bones to match.

Also I messed up punching the holes on the chest strap, was able to pivot the mistake into stitch details.

never let me stitch three 8oz layers of leather again this made my forearms cramp SO bad even with the use of pliers. BUT on the upside: it fucks

Ok so i realized I didnt get the correct steel wool. Got this "Rodent Barrier Kit" steel wool last night for like $4, and it is immediately working better, you can see the chemical reaction in the bubbles.

this took me a bit over 2 hours. pricking irons would probably change the whole game im ngl because im doing all this by hand w an awl. however. i do not want to buy another thing <- guy w a crafting tool problem
December 9, 2024 at 10:21 AM
anyway. bones are painted. only thing left is sewing. sewing the initial X was awful on my fingers, but since then i got a pack of john james 1/0 leather needles & did some sewing on another leather project. it is a NIGHT AND DAY difference from the big eye embroidery needles I was using before

Ok didnt update for a bit bc i hit a frustrating road block of my DYE being uneven and splotchy. Did test swatches, no issue. Got new dye, same issue. Pic #1 shows it, but it's worse IRL. I redyed the ENTIRE thing, which sucked bc i had already sewn it into an x shape. My apartment is tiny so like
December 9, 2024 at 7:47 AM
forgot to update uhH ok

1 - patterned out holdy bits
2 - cut leather to shape
3 - dye leather
3.1 - buff it like hell to get rid of excess dye
3.2 - burnish edges for finishing
3.3 - seal flesh side & edges to double-prevent dye-rub-off
4. remeasured, poked all the holes, stitched etc (5+ hrs 💀)

I cut up some BBQ sticks and then bent the ends, gonna use these for the "hold bucket" portion of the bucket buddy (bone buddy?). Metal BBQ sticks for strength, to reinforce the paperclay. gonna clean up the sculpt after its had the chance to harden up
December 1, 2024 at 12:32 AM
ALRIGHT so i figured out my bone folder (from bookbinding) works great for buffing out scratches and the hard edges of the flathead. i decided to tool in a stitch groove, bc i don't have a proper stitch groover but I like the look. then i dyed it black/finished the edges/re-poked stitch holes.

also i am pursuing the ancient roman art of vinegaroon/ black leather dye via ferric acatate. results to come. i have found inconsistant instructions on how long the chemical reaction takes (12 hrs vs like, 2 weeks??) so we will see how it develops 👍

I'm starting w just the back diamond.

this is my first time doing leather tooling, I scored it w my utility knife, & the pressed down hard using my screwdriver. it was super effective @ basic tooling, but the result has the hard edges of the flathead so :/ we will see if i can buff those out
November 25, 2024 at 7:18 AM
i am going to be making it out of leather.

first i patterned it out using paper I have been procrastinating taking to the recycling bin. the "IX" is for the back, bc my leather isn't long enough for straps that are the full length, & I can hide that under the diamond on the back.

I chose this for a few reasons:

1) proper panniers, 17th century undergarments meant to increase hip size, would give me dysphoria

2) a proper yoke would be impractical for planes/cons

3) a "bucket buddy" matches what i imagine is the *function* of cav panniers, aka carrying buckets of bones
November 25, 2024 at 7:06 AM
I'm going to be re-using my harrow (pants, shirt) & gideon (cloak) cosplays to provide the base fit, so the only real thing i have to make is his panniers. i considered a few options but decided to model it after this "bucket buddy" chest harness strap thing

banned from all social media until sunday due to spoilers so I went to the leather store for black friday sales and got like, half a cow. Immediately came home and made straps to keep it rolled up. "how are you posting this if you are avoiding social media" VERY CAREFULLY
November 24, 2024 at 2:55 AM
mostly I have just been skiving all the ends, bc the leather is too thick for normal rivets & too thick to properly loop around a ring w/o cutting it down. Im still using a utility knife, but i'm actually rlly pleased w the technique im using, I think i am getting pretty good at it.

anyway gn 🫡
November 22, 2024 at 8:24 AM
the problem w locking tf in is i black out for 3 hours and wake up with no progress pics taken.

anyway, making a lil custom project for a friend. all hardware is a placeholder rn (waiting for the good sales this weekend) but it is supposed to attach to a belt like this :)

I'm kind of obsessed with the blurry mirror selfie as some kind of avant garde style cryptid art form but also I do want an excuse to show off the actually good photos I have of this cosplay SO:

today's post dinner couch project is a tool organizer for one of my craft bins featuring leftover cardboard from my cat's food.
November 18, 2024 at 4:17 AM
anyway they're DONE!!! estimated time ~9-10 hours, most of which was spent countersinking and screwing in one million spikes, w a little R&D/patterning at the begining bc I've never made bracelets before.

I actually cannot model these bc my partner has tiny baby bird wrists & my hands dont fit 😔📿👍
