So far in 2025, we’ve seen steady growth in BIN records, reflecting the continuous expansion of the global species inventory. August’s update highlights international collaboration in DNA-based biodiversity research, with the largest number of new BINs this month contributed from Costa Rica.

The GEANS project (Genetic Tools for Ecosystem Health Assessment in the North Sea Region) added 4,005 high‑quality barcode sequences from 715 species, representing over 29% of North Sea macrobenthos species.
