I'm a Borders Johnston in fairness but that's a phrase that didn't get passed down the generations. And I've never dared wear a kilt. I got a bit of money from my long lost Great Uncle Thomas in Canada's will when he died a few years back... and discovered some of my family heritage on the way. #Ayr

16 years ago today we opened the doors to Dublin's newest bookshop. That @gutterbookshop.bsky.social continues to thrive today brings me so much joy. We created something that brought people together & celebrated books & reading. I feel like I added something good to the world & I'm so proud of that.

I met Julian Cope at Electric Picnic (he was doing a book event & I was bookseller) Loved Peggy Suicide album so was quite excited. He shook my hand wearing a large steel gauntlet which was quite painful. Good times.

I don't normally write in the evenings but bored of telly & too early to read as I'll fall asleep. So diving back into my ghost story armed with hot chocolate, lemon poppyseed cake, David Gray & Obie dog for company... #amwriting

Ah, today's Facebook memory was the bookshop customer who complained that I didn't send my staff into work during a hurricane because they were a bit bored at home... #StormOphelia killed 3 people in Ireland... #BookshopLife #Retail

Wonderful couple of days catching up with lots of crime writing friends at @murderonefest.bsky.social . And yes, I couldn't help but jump in to sell a few books along the way. Thrilled to finally meet author #JakeArnott who did a brilliant reading from his new novel #BloodRival .

The pure comedy of not being able to use the till. Unless the till is also a ghost. I suppose you didn't actually specify that he was a ghost. Could just be a middle-aged man wearing a plastic mask. But that's a different kind of creepy I guess...

Still giggling at this photo of me, my mum & my brother at Mum's 80th last week. My mum is very small but she's not 'photoshop' small. Perspective is an odd thing... (NB Mum was a systems analyst who ran a team of programmers & was deemed 'Mighty Mouse' for her project management skills..) #tinymum

Yip, yip - finally managed to get organised & I'm off to #Dublin for the weekend for @murderonefest.bsky.social ! And I get to go as a NORMAL PERSON! No bookselling duties for me... Looking forward to catching up with a few of my booky friends along the way... #murderonefest #murderonefest2025

It's why I'm always wary of old ladies having afternoon tea tbh... NB 'The Hunt' with Betty Gilpin has v strong 'Ready or Not' vibes if you haven't already seen it - same level of black humour, some gore but not excessive. I enjoyed it.
