My mother complained for years about how disappointed she was that she didn't have grandchildren (my sister doesn't want kids and I didn't get married until I was 36). Now that she has two grandchildren, she barely sees them because she cannot tolerate more than an hour or two around my daughter.

I agree w this but don’t fully agree that the issues are instead only social/cultural. I think a lot has to do w their daily lives, like there being affordable AND available child care, not waiting 9 months to see a specialist, supply chain problems, 9 streaming services to watch 1 sport…
I've come to think that one of the most important & ubiquitous analytical errors in politics is trying to translate all expressions of angst or discontent in the populace into economic terms. "If people are upset, the *real* reason must be changing material circumstances" is a quasi-religious tenet.

(a big reason that Tesla "full self drive" is so much worse than Waymo is that they just use cameras not LIDAR because cameras are way cheaper, but it's the LIDAR that makes Waymo a public health breakthrough, and also means the unit economics on the cars are negative as hell)
