Award winning poet. Prof.
So the Feds have found 'money' that presumably they did not have before, to poach 'top talent' from US universities. Please note thought that most of the actual work of teaching your kids is done not by 'top talent' but by us chickenshit leftovers.

Poets aren’t bad at self-promotion because we’re inherently humble, but because the habits that sustain poetry have very little to do with the habits required to promote it. Promotion can feel like an assault on the inner world by the outer one.

I see the word 'cult' used a great deal these days and I feel constrained to point out that it not a useful word at least in the academic sense: it embodies a conceptual confusion between its descriptive and normative uses that is hard to untangle.

Find you someone who reacts to losing you in the produce section like Orfeo losing Euridice*:
tragic devotion, wild-eyed searching, and yes—absolutely delivering the Gluck aria with full drama at full volume, right over there by the on-sale avocados.

I guess Christofellis is like the Alfred Deller of sopranists. Sounds legit but you have no one to compare him to. A falsetto voice is not really a stand in for a castrato I suppose but nor is a countertenor or a mezzo-soprano or any of the other 'solutions'.

I'm old enough to have imprinted on pre-period instrument recordings of certain works. Yes, more recent recordings of Gluck are 'better' in every way. Yet they don't quite provide the same frisson.

I suspect that most casual listeners will be ok with AI generated music...it will be formulaic with no unpleasant surprises. Most people hate most music (or would if they heard it) and AI can curate styles EXACTLY for you like no human can. Then, human music will be for aficionados.

In stead of sending a link to old threads every time someone uses the term "Dark Ages", I decided to put it all in an article.

Why most historians no longer use the biased misnomer “dark ages”.

This is not YET another article on why calling the early middle ages the dark ages is iffy, it’s a list of sources & references. These days most historians no longer use the term “D…

Known as “Hurrian Hymn No. 6,” this is the oldest complete #song known to humankind.

Discovered in an excavation in northern #Syria in the 1950s & written in #cuneiform in the #Hurrian language, the song is believed to date to at least 1400 B.C.
