Working at a medical university as a historian comes with challenges, but also with perks: Today I took part in a brain dissection, which gave me a real grasp of something I've only read about. The experience of holding a brain in your hands is perhaps only comparable to seeing the Earth from space.

Herwig Czech put forward an extended study of Hans Asperger's entanglement with the Nazi medical regime. It is a highly nuanced account of his involvement in child murders at the notorious 'death' ward 'Am Spiegelgrund' in Vienna based on previously neglected documents and medical expertise.

The island of Okunoshima, top secret site of Japan's largest chemical weapons factory during WWII, was quite literally erased from maps. It is by far my most favourite haiku and this guy is a genius!
