I love how the National Taiwan University Library Special Collections brochure looks like a menu. And they do have delicate stuff, I can tell you that...

Working at a medical university as a historian comes with challenges, but also with perks: Today I took part in a brain dissection, which gave me a real grasp of something I've only read about. The experience of holding a brain in your hands is perhaps only comparable to seeing the Earth from space.

Great opportunity to work at the wonderful #NRI. This is a quiet retreat where you can truly get to research without distractions (except for the stunning garden and occasional furry visitors). Also Darwin College is a great place with lots of #histsci people. Apply!

Herwig Czech put forward an extended study of Hans Asperger's entanglement with the Nazi medical regime. It is a highly nuanced account of his involvement in child murders at the notorious 'death' ward 'Am Spiegelgrund' in Vienna based on previously neglected documents and medical expertise.

Memorial for the 800 children murdered by Nazi euthanasia at the Viennese psychiatric ward "Am Spiegelgrund". One light for every child.
Also see the online exhibition on the history of the "Steinhof", a center of Nazi medical crimes in Vienna #histmed #neveragain

Would you play with the Radioactive Atomic Energy Lab Kit with Uranium (1950)? It does look pretty neat, but I guess not even in the 50s...

The island of Okunoshima, top secret site of Japan's largest chemical weapons factory during WWII, was quite literally erased from maps. As illustrated by this section of a 1938 map of Japan, the island and its surrounding area is completely covered in white. #histsci #histtech #history #WWII #maps

The eerie island of Okunoshima 大久野島, popular among tourists as the cute "rabbit island" harboring hundreds of friendly fluffy residents, has a sinister history as a main Japanese production site of wartime poison gas. Watch this great short film by @fotografritz.bsky.social here: okunoshima.video

Take a moment and read about "radium girl" Katherine Schaub, who pioneered worker's rights and contributed to the classification of radium as toxic, saving the lives of future workers. A Time article from 1930 reveals, that she was als a pretty cool character. ↓

狂った一頁 [Kurutta Ichipeiji] "A Page of Madness" (1926) is the earliest Japanese avantgard movie touching the topic of mental illnes and psychiatric institutionalisation. Script by Kawabata Yasunari et al. Still a much recommended watch, especially the iconic dance scene. Enjoy below↓ #histmed #histpsy

This is a haiku by a long term patient of a psychiatric ward in Japan (feat. in documentary "Seishin" 精神, 2008), it reads:

bitten by a mosquito
I also want to eat
pork curry

It is by far my most favourite haiku and this guy is a genius!
