The correct answer is that he probably doing the thing where he’s summarising the poem in a few lines but has put the summary in quotes like an absolute tube, because rules, what rules?

I have to keep reminding myself that people will just check out if I tell them more than they want for free from me for their class or whatever.
(Even if it kind of hurts not to say it)

Now I have to resist the impulse to send a follow up message now that woken up more and something’s slid into place for me a bit more.

I can’t find anyone who wants a five page poem off me!
The despair!
And all I have is a battered plastic air-freshener.

Another interesting feature is these short, repetitive lines aren’t usually stressed aloud in a way that is familiar from English poetry — if you listen to Leivick reading, it’s in a very Russian-style, almost chanted, declamation (One particular recording shows this off very well)

I wonder about this literary almost-stammer in context of other things.
Charney picks up on it, calling the repetition, particularly when in the same line, an ‘Internal refrain.’ I’m waiting to see if Rivkin comments.

I know there’s archival material between Leivick and Charney, and that some of the correspondence was published at one point, but I don’t have access to that.
(I am reminded of the time I was back in the States, visiting family in DE and AZ and was asked why I didn’t just take the bus to Emory!)

This incident was briefly mentioned in Madison’s book from 60s with an overview of Yiddish writers and writing, but the book’s not particularly well-cited (bibliography, yes, but good luck finding exact quotes) — I was very cheered to have found it a while back.

Pursuant to this: If you are my partner and you send me the command to order a new card, and I ask if you know where the kid’s birth certificate is, don’t tell me that that ‘of course‘ you know and then not tell me where that is
‘Somewhere in the house’ is not an answer. Still can’t find my brayer.
