No, they weren't stupid. They felt they had built in protections against a tyrant, believing that they had fought against one and there would be a consensus among Americans to oppose tyranny. They could not foresee full party complicity, and to be fair, it didn't happen for 250 years.

You believe, somehow, there is a world in which some unknown Party will come into power and abandon Israel in favor of...whom? Fact is, a resounding Democratic win would have greatly increased the political capital to allow pressure on Israel, saving thousands.
