The impact of this is that criticism of the president, on non-partisan grounds, is now coded as a partisan action. If David Muir says that the president is doing something that experts say is unconstitutional, this comes off as Democratic-leaning speech solely because the company brand has become more Democratic-leaning. And this means that, so long as news remains committed to the values that Edward Murrow and Walter Cronkite embodied, it is simply not possible for a company covering Trump to remain — as viewed by the political right — effectively non-partisan. This set up a standoff between the journalists, and the values of a news operation, and the PR executives of a mega-corporation. You can guess who won. My anecdotal experience suggests executives decided (explicitly or otherwise) to preserve their news hegemony by constantly attempting to minimize backlash among Republicans, often by marginalizing Democrats. Many times in my tenure at ABC, I was told we couldn’t work with certain data vendors or had to change language in our stories to avoid giving Republicans something they could use to criticize the company. (Many of us were unhappy and tried to quit over this, but it’s not like we had other places to go.) Higher-ups blacklisted data suppliers with histories of working for Democrats, after signing off on projects using those suppliers, and they stripped our copy of nuance and empirical caveats that “could be taken out of context” (at the suggestion of the PR team and Disney’s lawyers). In my opinion, the big problem at network news boils down to this: Executives don’t actually see news as journalism.

Along with the mañanera came a slew of political reforms aimed at reviving Mexico’s democratic culture. Popular consultations invited citizens to vote on polarizing government priorities, such as the cancellation of the planned international Mexico City Texcoco Airport, accused of excessive environmental damage; following the vote, the airport was relocated to a disused military base, and the build site was replaced by the Lake Texcoco Ecological Park. A new federal law instituted presidential recall elections to allow citizens to decide whether the leader should continue in office halfway through their term (while only a fifth of registered voters turned out for AMLO’s mid-term mandate referendum, he won with 91.9 percent of the vote). Meanwhile, the government popularized the idea of “republican austerity” as an orientation to government spending—including the largely symbolic reduction of high-ranking public officials’ salaries alongside the elevation of those of low-earning bureaucrats, and the $92 million sale of the luxury presidential plane—with the goal of projecting a sense of responsibility from discredited state authorities. The communication around the project was accordingly sharp: “It’s important that everyone knows how people thought before, how the authorities acted, like little pharaohs,” AMLO said. “Not any more.”

I don't agree with the whole article but I think this is a good list of stuff DSA needs to build in order to become a real mass party. I'd add a very rigorous system of recruiting party members and providing organizing and skills trainings for all, and robust internal democratic/member control

Schumer says that he is accompanied everywhere he goes by two imaginary middle-class friends, who advise him on all manner of middle-class concerns. Their names, until recently, were Joe and Eileen O’Reilly. “For the book’s sake, we wanted them to be more national,” Schumer said, “so they became the Baileys.” The Baileys live in Massapequa, in Nassau County, a town that is invariably known on Long Island as “Matzoh-Pizza.” The Baileys are both forty-five years old: Joe works for an insurance company, Eileen is a part-time employee at a doctor’s office. They worry about terrorism, and about values, and they are patriots—“Joe takes off his cap and sings along with the national anthem before the occasional Islanders game,” Schumer wrote. He elaborated, “They’re not ideologues. They’re worried about property taxes. It’s the tax they hate. And that’s what Democrats don’t get.” He has also drafted the Baileys in defending the C.I.A.’s human-intelligence program: “Had Joe and Eileen been in the room after the hum-int screwup, they would not have indulged in the blame game, gutted the human-intelligence program, or weakened America.” The Baileys, Schumer said, sometimes dine out—not often, because of the cost—and they like Chinese. Which raised the question: What would the Baileys eat, if they were here at Hunan Dynasty? “The more conventional stuff,” Schumer said, “but they’re with it.”
