I think the U.S. poster trend started with The Nutty Professor remake (1996) followed up by The Klumps...? Not sure if there was an example earlier than that.
But the Japanese aesthetic feels of a kind with the U.S. trend towards "epic" assemblage posters:

Without too much detail, in one scene a witch and a bratty teen girl are dueling with evil eyes and the older woman wins, causing milk cartons and bottles to appear all over the girl's chin while she cries quietly.
