If I'm reading the votes correctly, if there were 3 additional living Democrats in the U.S. House, the Republicans could not have passed the reconciliation bill they just did.

Another RBG effect - the ego of the olds wreaking long-term damage. Absolutely damning indictment of the Democrats.

The wrong reason to be mad at the Democrats is that they're not lefty enough or whatever.

The proper reason to be mad at the Democrats is that the party leadership is a gerontocracy and they're sorta okay with that.

Are all NYT economics reporters bad, or just that one guy who appears to be innumerate?

TIL that there are still areas in northeastern France - zone rouge - that are still so devastated from World War One that they're legally restricted from any use. No housing or farming is allowed there due to the vast amount of human and animal remains and unexploded ordnance.

They don't have any plan. There's no Big Conspiracy, in the formal sense; it's just a pure war on competence. They're careless people, breaking things, and don't particularly care because they know they won't be around when it comes time for picking up the pieces.

AOC drawing an audience of thousands in Utah, a Trump +22 state that is absolutely not politically competitive in any way, suggests that maybe crowd sizes aren't really very meaningful.

Just a reminder that a lot of the glib stock market/investing wisdom you read about on social media might be fine advice if you're a professional trader with a 7-figure fund.

But if you're playing around with a Robinhood account, a lot of that doesn't apply to you. You're the chum.

All the tariff memes are pretty good, but I can only imagine the memes circulating over on weibo right now making fun of Americans for thinking they're going to manufacture iphones.

We can't even build houses in this country. You want me to attach a rear photo array??

Whoever we are, wherever we stand, one thing we can all rally around in these times of discord and strife is cheering on as Duke basketball chokes at the last second and goes home sad. 😆

The reason to oppose the Trumper assault on ivy league universities is because of its capricious corruptness. Targeted research defunding is being done purely for political theatrics, to punish institutions for expression. That's awful.

That said, I have no love for these institutions themselves.

This article, written by @davidfrum.bsky.social eight years ago this month, was remarkably prescient. He was right.

How to Build an Autocracy
The preconditions are present in the U.S. today. Here’s the playbook Donald Trump could use to set the country down a path toward illiberalism.

This insight, from @ezrakleinbot.bsky.social, is one that a lot of liberals will have a hard time accepting - but it's true.

Houston has a lot of problems. But more people can afford to live there than, like, NYC or Boston. So they do, and that matters.
