An inventor who improved the technologies we use to the day, Mr. Boykin patented 26 devices. One of these inventions is the control unit that helps improved the pacemaker. His later contributions also were used by the military and IBM. #blackinventor

Mr. Matthew Henson
Largely ignored until recently, Mr. Henson has recd his due in the field of navigation and maritime. As a member of the first team to navigate to the North Pole, it is said to be Mr. Henson who planted the US flag, making him the first to reach the landmark.

Dr. Charles Drew
Known as the Father of the Blood Banking, it was Dr. Drew's research and work that allowed for new ways in which blood was stored. His work found that if whole blood and plasma was separated, the "shelf life" could be extended up to 7 days. #blackmedicalexcellence

He gave the world graffiti, street art, and neo-expressionism through his lens. His art adorns museums all over the world and in the private collections of those who can afford it. In 2017, a piece sold for $110,000,000 - a record price for art by a black artist 🔥

Sojourner Truth
Formerly enslaved, Ms. Truth, was a firm participant in the fight for civil and women's rights. She challenged that suffrage and gender inferiority for women could also be argued with formerly enslaved men, which caused disagreements with Douglass...all of this by 1860 ✊🏾

Judge Jane Bolin
Many firsts for Judge Bolin as she was the first black woman to attend Yale Law School in 1931 and in 1939 she became the first black female judge in the United States. She used her court to challenge and fight discriminatory and segregationist practices. 🔥✊🏾

Ms. Hattie McDaniel
THE first black actor to win an Oscar (Gone With the Wind) appeared in over 300 films during her career. She was the 13th child of former slaves and knew from the age of 6 she wanted to be an actress, sing, and dance. Her legacy is undeniable.

Dr. James McCune Smith
The first black person to earn a medical degree in the US, Dr. Smith worked with Frederick Douglass to establish the Nat Council of Colored People. Due to restrictions here, he earned 3 academic degrees, incl. Dr of Medicine in Scotland. #blackmedicalexcellence

Dr. Daniel Hale Williams,III
A former shoemaker, Dr. Williams recd his medical degree in 1883. He opened Provident Hospital in Chicago where he trained black doctors and nurses. In 1893, he performed the 1st successful open heart surgery on a black man with limited tools. #blackmed

Mr. Victor Hugo Green grew tired of blacks having so much uncertainty about their safety when traveling in NYC. As a result, he published The Negro Motorist Green Book, which listed places blacks were safe while traveling. The book eventually was expanded to the south and west coast. 🔥

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first black woman to qualify as a physician in the United States in 1864. She dedicated her life and her own clinic to treating those who lived in poverty. She did not care if they could not pay - she was not turning any one away. #blackmedicalexcellence

Mr. Robert Smalls
On May 13, 1862, Mr. Smalls was amongst a crew of slaves on a cotton steamer in confederate waters. He covered his face with a large brim hat and pretended to be the capt (when the real capt was absent) and sailed everyone to freedom finding the Union army at sea. 🔥✊🏾

The misconception is that Thomas Edison had everything to do with the light bulb BUT PAUSE because Mr. Latimer told him it could be better. It was Mr. Latimer's invention of the carbon filament that created longer lasting bulbs. #wemakeitbetter

Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded Negro History Week in 1926, which was the 2nd week of February. He is known as the Father of Black History. In 1976, BHM was established.

The next time you grab that ice cream scooper you can thank Mr. Cralle (1862-1920) for his invention and patent in 1897.

#BHM Day 9 and in honor of Super Bowl Sunday
On 1920, Mr. Fritz Pollard became the first black man to play in the NFL. After his departure, an agreement was made amongst whites prevent signing black players. By 1946, four black men reintegrated the NFL. In 2025 Goddell stated DEI is remaining.

Black Wall Street got it's beginnings in 1866 when the Cherokee nation signed a treaty that gave freed slaves Cherokee citizenship and 160 acres of land, thus beginning the boom of INDEPENDENTLY ran black towns in Oklahoma. The Greenwood District became known as Black Wall Street.

Mr. Kelly Miller was a mathematician and the first black man to be admitted to Johns Hopkins University. In 1865, he transitioned to Howard University to be the first to teach sociology. He spent his life at Howard U until the day he died at his home on the school's campus.

The old western movies were likely depicted from the real-life black cowboy perspective, they just forgot to say their names or show their faces. Nat Love, born into slavery in 1854, was also known as Deadwood Dick. His 1907 autobiography reads like what we see on TV.

"I was about 4 years old the first time I ever saw what happened when you acted up to whites" (Hoose, 12). But when she was 15, her bus ride would change history as she was the first to be arrested for not giving up her seat to white people, 9 mts before Parks.
