I think I saw The Guardian critic give it 2/5, which massively put me off, but seeing this has put it back on the agenda.

Yep, I did the same. CM2 was my first; brilliant but very much ‘of its time’. I remember writing to Eidos whenever my CM3 disc stopped working and they kindly sent me another for free. Great customer service.
