Local communities prosper, benefiting from sustainable grazing and agriculture, all supported by the ecosystem services of this restored landscape.

✨Our vision for 2050: The forests across the Yeghegis Valley are fully restored. At least ten hydropower plants have been removed or restored, allowing the river to flow freely once again.

Our partner @fpwc.bsky.social is driving the valley’s revival, from reforesting slopes to reviving biodiversity, and is partnering with local communities to protect the valley’s future.

But the valley’s fragile ecosystem faces mounting threats from hydropower, unsustainable harvesting of wild fruits, mismanaged waste and overgrazing.

Tucked away in the Caucasus region, this valley harbours a stunning array of globally and regionally threatened species, including elusive predators like the Persian Leopard, wildcats and lynx, as well as the endangered Armenian Mouflon—of which fewer than 200 individuals remain in Armenia.

With @clientearth.bsky.social, we filed a complaint & today the Ombudswoman confirmed what we have said for a long time:

Democracy cannot be sidestepped, and environmental protections cannot be weakened in the shadows!

But instead of an open, evidence-based process, meetings were held with only 4 farming unions, ignoring citizens, NGOs, and scientific evidence entirely.

😱 Even more surprising 2/4 of the agriculture unions rejected the proposal! But the Commission went ahead without proper impact assessment!

👀 Our vision: the Osogovo region’s biodiversity thrives alongside vibrant local traditions. Forests are more resilient to climate change, with reduced soil erosion and healthier ecosystems that have brought back species like the Semi-collared Flycatcher and White-backed Woodpecker.
November 14, 2025 at 10:27 AM
Luckily, our Partner Macedonian Ecological Society is spearheading a mission to restore Osogovo and revive its biodiversity. ⭐️
November 14, 2025 at 10:27 AM
🚨 But the fragmentation and degradation of Osogovo’s forests are weakening the mountain’s natural defences and increasing the risk of wildfires and landslides. Invasive species, unsustainable farming, and poaching further disrupt the ecosystem.

The Commission’s proposal for the next EU budget risks abandoning LIFE.

Removing LIFE means removing a lifeline for nature, deepening an already critical biodiversity funding gap, & undermining Europe’s environmental goals.

LIFE must be kept alive. Nature needs funding to survive.
