Habitat availability also plays an important role. There are more dragonfly lotic species (which prefer running waters) in areas with more rivers and streams, albeit the relationship of lentic species with standing water habitats is more complex. 🧪🌐 👇

Temperature determines the northward decrease in species richness, and precipitation does so for the southward decrease. But the last ice age climate had a greater influence than current climate in northern Europe, particularly for species related to standing water habitats. 🧪🌐 👇
Deviance partitioning results expressed as percentages of explained deviance of each independent and joint fraction of the predictors for each study group (all odonates, lotic species, lentic species) in the two study areas (Northern and Southern Europe). White is for the influence of past climate, grey for current climate, and blue for habitat availability.

The study by @biomolic.bsky.social, @cristinaronquillo.bsky.social et al. shows that dragonfly species richness is higher in Central Europe and decreases both northwards and southwards from there, mainly due the higher diversity of lentic species (which depend on standing water habitats). 🧪🌐 👇
