This is a hell of a take given the right has done everything they can to influence the judiciary up to and including the blocking of a Supreme Court nominee for nearly a year and taking their list of judges directly from the The Heritage Foundation.

And this one hit me hard too. My mom never got over the JFK assassination, and I don't think she ever trusted the government the way she had before afterwards. She still gets teary eyed sometimes when she talks about JFK and how good he was.

Unfortunately where we find ourselves today is largely driven by a political system that allows the rich to feed into the frenzy of the most puritanical and loathing inclinations of those who have been fed lies about the “other” - be it by their church, Joe Rogan, or their uncle’s Facebook feed. I am not sure what the fix to any of this is, other than pushback and revolt by the very ones who have enabled it to get this far. But I can say that I don't think the crusade ends until these people end up consuming themselves in their own frenzy.

I think sometimes people in my life look at me and wonder what changed, how could this person that we knew when he was a child have grown up into this particular man. It wasn't one thing, but a series of many. See I grew up as a preacher’s kid, pulled from town to town across Great State of Maine as my Dad was cast out of church after church. It was always the church peoples’ faults, of course, and never his. He was a Godly man after all. I volunteered with the church. I ran food banks. I helped my dad do church renovations. We finished basements into useable space, upgraded parsonages, built wheelchair ramps. The salary was poor, and my Dad wouldn't let my mom work most of the time, so we often ended up pinching to make ends meet. I remember there being points when I was a kid that, in between churches, the money was stretched so thin, we’d take our paper food stamps (dating myself with that one) and we’d trudge to all the convenience stores to buy 25¢ snack cakes to get the 75¢ in quarters that we’d flip into $7.50 or so to put gas in the tank so dad could get to work. We were on Medicaid, got heating assistance, and were generally on the government dime my whole life even when at a church. Churches in rural Maine usually don't pay enough to make the ends meet. Suffice it to say, we grew up my entire life paycheck to paycheck. Free lunches were normal for me. I didn't know enough to be embarrassed about it then, and by the time I did I had a high school job and just bought the cheap pizza slices. Yet every Sunday there I was in church, watching the same damned people day in and day out. The ones who smiled saintly on Sunday morning, and stayed late after Church to chat about the uncouth folks in the back with holes in their jeans. The ones that would bitch about folks wanting handouts at the food bank, but then say folks should turn to their local churches and stop begging the government for their hard earned tax dollars. Hell my own father would make half of the critiques while being a heavy beneficiary of the social safety net. Christianity today wonders where the faithful have gone, but lacks the self introspection to ask why they have left. It isn't that the world lacks spirituality. I’d argue more search for meaning today than at any point in the past. However those who have disillusioned by the teachings of the church vs the actions of its people have left and many of those who are left behind are the most radical dregs of the faith. Those of ideology over theology, purism over practice. When I went to college, I left the church. It wasn't the “Indoctrination of liberal educational institutions” nor “DEI” that turned me away. It was that when I went to undergrad, I found that the Christianity I had most been fundamentally taught to believe in wasn't to be found in the Church, but in the “sinners” the church warned of from the pulpit every Sunday. I found in those folks the most open and welcome acceptance of all, love for they neighbor, the love of service over self, and fellowship without expectations.
