Literature. Revels in the nastiest parts of the physical in a way that a) I think is really difficult to sustain in writing and b) also rewrites and amplifies the pleasurable elements in contrast. + a really well-crafted ensemble cast.

I'm calling it on Turn of the Screw as a dnf, unfortunately. simply was not vibing with the style, life is too short, my to-read list too long, &c.

First: Hungerstone! Billed as a feminist Carmilla retelling—definitely historical fiction with modern sensibilities, plus excellent historical research backing. Messy women characters, gory and lovely.

Last summer my partner and I moved to a smallish town where we knew nobody and since we both work from home it’s been super hard to make friends. But I recently read this book and I’m finding it so encouraging and motivating to finally start trying to connect myself with people here. Wish me luck!
