Working in a coffee shop today and they're playing "In-A-Godda-Davida" by Iron Butterfly (wow!) - recalling that I used to like to play this on the jukebox at one of the places we frequented in Charlottesville because I thought it was the best value for a quarter.

Yikes
#BLS has delayed the 2024 Consumer Expenditures Survey annual release. This is likely due to the severe understaffing in the agency.
Staff losses and hiring freeze are taking their toll.

Signed
Over 125 economists signed the open letter calling on the President, Congress, and the American public to uphold the principles of Federal Reserve independence and not remove Lisa Cook without due process.

There's still time to sign! And please share.

This is a video I made at work a couple of weeks ago to explain why economists are so concerned by attacks on the Fed’s independence, which may lead to more inflation and higher long-term interest rates (and there are bigger rule of law issues at stake tonight, too) m.youtube.com/watch?v=q7jJ...

This is an attack on democracy itself.

No Democratic or Republican politician can be allowed to suppress the most basic facts that the reveal real-world effects of policy.

Facts are the only basis for accountability, and thus a firebreak against dictatorship.
Unquestionably the most dangerous and corrupt attack on the independence of US economic data in American history. Trump is firing the head of the BLS, a longtime civil servant confirmed 86-8 by the Senate, simply because the job numbers came in below his expectations today

This is particularly important for this region - Colorado Springs has 2nd highest veteran share among metro areas with populations over 500,000 (metro area is El Paso + Teller counties, Killeen-Temple TX is highest)
Nearly one third of the employees at VA health care facilities in the U.S. are veterans.

Now many of them, victims of the government’s mass layoffs, are out of a job.

We talked to a few of them. It’s on the Gazette’s front page today:
