US50 thru Nevada is called the Loneliest Highway. NV722 is a former route of US50 which is even lonelier. It traverses the 25mya Desatoya Caldera. This canyon is where 722 crosses the rim of that caldera. The rocks are welded tuffs.

When basalt cools the resulting contraction can create hexagonal weathering. Navajo Sandstone can also show hexagonal weathering; but, it is caused by expansion of the rock as it decompresses when exposed.

Hexagonal weathering in Navajo Sandstone. Caused as the rock is exhumed by erosion. Since it lithified a depth under higher pressure the lower depth/exposure causes the rock to expand slightly. 55 minutes of star trails with a dieing tree. It was a calm night but there were occasional breezes. If a star trail looks like it in front of a branch that branch moved during the exposure. If it didn’t move it look like the star went behind the branch.

Taken near Neah Bay, WA July 17, 2025. Neah Bay is the closest town to Cape Flattery, the northwestern-most point in the contiguous United States. The drive along the coast was gorgeous. You can see Vancouver Island across the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
