You will never read a more eloquent description of preferential voting aka ranked choice voting (USA) aka the alternative vote (UK).
2. Votes are cast in order of preference. 1st choice, second choice, etc.
3. When counting, if the voter's 1st choice doesn't have the numbers then that vote goes on to their second choice candidate. Then 3rd, etc.
Eventually one candidate will have a majority of votes and is elected.
