Recovering motorist
Two roads, two hundred meters apart, within minutes the other day on my bike commute. Which is the best?

Couldn't seem to catch the brilliance of the moment despite pulling off the main path to do so. A shot never can. Misses key elements, the silent whisper of a buck crossing in front or the soft sounds a skein makes passing overhead.

To understand gravel's appeal we have two road scenarios. Imagine it packed full w/ commuters, anxious and harried. They're being kind and trying to get over as they whiz by. Knuckles whiten and tension mounts. There's another road, calm and tranquil. Blood pressure drops and the endorphins kick in.

Couldn't have said it any better.

Who asked for more bike pics? Every now and again, get lucky. Just the right lighting. The backdrop works. Bike doesn't fall over.

Shot up on Tram road atop Wye mountain Saturday. Tram serves as a gateway to the Ouachita mountains. A range grouped with the Arkansas River Valley. Together with the Ozark Plateaus, the Ouachitas form the U.S. Interior Highlands, one of few mountainous regions between the Appalachians and Rockies.

Shot up on Ft. Roots from yesterday's bonus ride. "The [Arkansas] river valley expands as it encounters much flatter land beginning just west of Little Rock [, AR]. It continues eastward across the plains and forests of eastern Arkansas until it flows into the Mississippi River (from wikipedia)"

Sports enthusiasts use the term "Type 2 Fun" when an activity's enjoyment is derived after the fact. e.g. Saturday's "Winter Endurance" in Lincoln, NE. Temps at the start in teens (-7C) and dropped. Winds out of the North 30+ (45kph). Blowing snowdrifts. Some riders had a few miles of hike-a-bike.

Little things help. Like when you know there'll be pie at the turnaround point. Had my heart set on pecan, grown in these parts. Settled on apple. We're talking about Charlotte's in Keo, AR. Best damn pie around.

Here's the thing about riding in the extreme cold. It only sucks for the first 20 minutes, when there's a headwind or downhill and during the last couple of hours. Other than that it's not too bad.

Speaking of Rasberry Pi's, its setup was last year's "Black Op". I can report some success. It's now functioning as a mini dev env after my Linux VM bit the dust yesterday. Can't do everything here (obviously). At least continuing my current Skunkworks development (2025's Black Op).

Shot from yesterday's Ouachita Gravel Grinder. Held every year in its National Forest the first week of Jan. Conditions are notoriously BAD. It was nippy, but remained dry and so no UGH in our OGG. Lots of climbing and descents, punctuated by beautiful vistas and clear streams this one's a must.

The book I've been recommending is "Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir. A sci-fi "journal" written several years ago. The same author also wrote "The Martian". Weaving mathematics, physics, and climatology into the narrative keeps it real. Haven't finished yet (no spoilers please).

The Pie Ride was a smashing success. The weather splendid. We had pecan pie (made from locally sourced ingredients). There were squirrels to inspire and lead us. What more do you want.

Yesterday was a typical cold and damp December day. Temps in the 40's (single digits Celsius). The largest concern isn't comfort as proper gear fixes that. Rather, it's the loss of traction. One careless moment and you'll be kissing the pavement.

Pie rides have often been discussed but we have yet to ride "THE Pie Ride", held only at the Arkansas Pecan Festival, Saturday, December 7th @ 9AM in Keo.

If yer looking for safe roads and don't mind wind and flat, this will be a good start.

In these parts the gravel gets Chunky Monkey

All for toughing the weather but think I'll sit this one out.
