Berkeley also suppressed the Free Speech Movement, the Vietnam protests (one fatality), and the anti-apartheid protests, movements it now claims credit for.

Yeah, I think administrators view salary savings as found money they can spend as they wish, often not on salaries.

Washington, D.C., like Oakland, has a strong enough Black community to resist some of the effects of racial capital, and to carve out a space for what remains of the culture. Efforts like Don’t Mute DC and BBQ’ing While Black are important pieces of the struggle.

Another was the reaction to Washingtonian Magazine's "I Am Not A Tourist" promotional campaign, which highlighted a number of DC-based social media influencers, none of them Black. The magazine had to withdraw the piece.

One of the efforts I learned about there was the Don't Mute DC movement, which began, similarly to BBQ'ing While Black in Oakland, when a new resident complained about a historically common activity, in this case playing Go-Go music outside a cell phone store.

While there I had the great pleasure of stumbling upon the Go-Go Museum & Cafe, which is the result of a years-long effort to fight gentrification and cultural erasure. The curators are excited and joyful to share their music and their history. Check it out.

As I found in SF's Mission District and Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, increased housing construction (+1190 net units since 2017) correlates with decreased residential density (-1968 residents). Be skeptical of claims that housing construction in Black and brown communities will increase density.

Inflation-adjusted median income has more than doubled since 2000, and is up 44% since 2017. The Black population, which had risen from 2000-2017, has now dropped below 2000 levels.

In the 2018 analysis of neighborhoods with streets named for MLK, Anacostia stood out as a place where median income was rising while the Black population was stable. Development without displacement. Since then, unfortunately, displacement has begun.

I may be more of a technical geek than you, but I had an extraction a few weeks ago that required a bunch of cracking, scraping, and vise grips work, and I was able to compartmentalize it as engineering requirements for the operation.
