King Sorrow
Joe Hill

Having been a fan of his mother and father’s books, it’s always exciting to read the offspring show his talent — and drop names from their works. Made me laugh, made me cry, made me see a dragon in the sky. 🐉

James
Percival Everett

Slavery was/is more than forced labor. The power of literacy & critical thinking in a country where to show you have those skills would mean torture or death. Today’s Christian Nationalism enforces book bans, anti-science, advocating for AI. MAGA goals.

Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng
Kylie Lee Baker

Who knew? Ghosts and Covid and crime and mystery. And the ending, just a touch of fear with some orange slices.

124th Book of 2025
Americanah
Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche

How did I miss reading this book? I should have found it after “We Should All Be Feminists”. I read parts out loud to my spouse & there was so much to absorb. If we had rebranded racism as Racial Disorder Syndrome, would we still have Trump?

123rd Book of 2025
Purple Hibiscus
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Fear and courage and sacrifice. Wealth and poverty. And being strong enough to keep going.

Feminist Manifesto in 15 Suggestions
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Wish I’d had these suggestions when my boys were little. I hope I taught most of them anyway.

A Short Walk Through a Wide World
Douglas Westerbeke

Very lyrical, melodic, far reaching. Couldn’t put it down. Great respite for a day, recovering from COVID.

Do yourself a favor and watch Ken Burns’ American Revolution and hear words of Abigail Adam’s, one wise and remarkable woman!

I am more and more convinced that Man is a dangerous creature, and that power whether vested in many or a few is ever grasping, and like the grave cries give, give.

The Namesake
Thumpa Latino

Reading this book, I kept reflecting on how as a nation, we used to welcome immigrants, as a nation of immigrants. If the fictional people were in the U.S. now, they’d be ripped from their homes/work to be tossed out of the country. What have we become?

Absolutely. But that last sentence. How very Orwellian.

What I don’t understand is his supporters? He bankrupted his businesses & is now bankrupting our country. He is a convicted rapist and bragged about raping women on air, and now denies he’s a pedophile when he bragged about walking in on naked juveniles. He’s has always been a fucking loser pervert!

The Librarians
Sherry Thomas

A very nice read but the concluding paragraphs really uplifted me (don’t read if you don’t want a possible spoiler). In today’s chaos, cherish the moments.

I’m a veteran who served my country in a war zone. My grandfather, my father, my sons & I served w/pride. Our unlawful FOTUS & regime denigrates their oath of office, destroying our country, to advance a Christian Nationalist dictatorship pushing thru Project 2025. I am ashamed of what we’ve become.

The Trespasser
Tana French

She writes a good book. Makes you wait for the next one out. Sometimes there’s connections from other books, sometimes not. But it’s always riveting. And I need a respite distraction with all the shit going on!
