Literally, the three spirits:

"Instead of dealing with rising health insurance premiums we're going to contribute to an account that explicitly can't be used to pay for health insurance premiums".

We need some remedial financial literacy lessons for senators stat.
i am still pretty skeptical they’ve actually got the votes for this, which is maybe the stupidest fucking possible way to break the shutdown
"A development that appeared to break the logjam: Republicans proposed that healthcare funding be provided directly to households rather than used to pay for a 1-year extension of ACA subsidies. That involves sending federal money into FSAs instead of insurance companies" www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

There's a lot of objectively worse stuff going on but something about the Trump people canceling IRS Direct File really gets me. Yeah, the private sector was really doing a bang up job there, that's why everyone uses and loves TurboTax.

I'm still fascinated by these dumb Trump accounts from the OBBBA. They weren't part of any campaign pledge or policy platform, nobody's out there trying to explain or build buy-in for them, and not one government publication explains *why* they were crammed into the law. Just dropped it in there!

They have Sean McVay doing Trust & Will commercials? There is officially too much private equity money sloshing around, we need to cut the tech companies off.

Most magical weekend of the year in Boston.
my sister googled "fun things to do in Boston this weekend" and it told her to go sit on Storrow Drive and watch a bunch of college kids peel their rented Penske moving trucks open like tin cans

Fantastic State Fair this year. I went with the family Thursday, went back without the kids that night, and had a blast both times. Highly needed respite amidst all the chaos and tragedy.

We had exactly one (1) year where you could just buy baseball games to watch without having to also buy a bunch of other crap that you don't want.

One thing I wish I had learned earlier is that you can dump just about any food you've got lying around into a pan with a can of coconut milk and a jar of curry paste and it will taste amazing. Chicken, potatoes, beans, eggplant, spinach, tofu, whatever. Instant good stuff.

My opinion of ChatGPT (and LLM tools in general) has coalesced to:

If it's used to reorganize, rewrite, or summarize something that already exists, it can be moderately useful (though review and editing are still essential).

If it's used for pretty much anything else, it stinks.

Listened to OK Computer for the first time in awhile tonight and I don't understand anyone who doesn't think it's the best Radiohead album. Every track just kills it.

Air quality warning today due to smoke from the aftermath of the 2025 Twins' trade deadline
August 1, 2025 at 3:00 PM
It does indeed wear on you more each day
Minnesota is under an Air Quality Alert through SATURDAY.

This is one of the longer stretches of smoke we will see this summer. Why? Lighter north to northeast winds for several days.

You might want to limit time outside each passing day.

Man, I haven't listened to Ozzy or Sabbath in a long time but I loved them when I was a teenager. I even liked Mama I'm Coming Home. RIP.

Greenville, SC has an airplane-themed playground next to the municipal airport where kids can play while watching planes take off and land, and my new policy stance is that every town should be required to have this.

The last house I lived in someone had played a game of "how many different wires can I stuff into one junction box?". Everything time I needed to futz with a light switch it was like one of those cans of nuts with the gag snake in it.
One thing about homeownership is you spend an afternoon cutting a piece of wood to odd dimensions to cover a hole in the attic floor where someone needed access to the bedroom ceiling, patched it with a piece of particle board that someone stepped through, and covered that with a disintegrating mat.

Wait, Omaha finally got Jean Stothert out of office? Guess all those years of not actually living in Nebraska caught up to her.
