I’m so irresponsible, I don’t own a pet. But if I could, I’d own a songbird farm. Somebody should be raising songbirds.
Yes. Western Canada. The east side of British Columbia by the Rocky mountains

I love that area. Wish I had more time to explore the coast.

Those big leaf plants are Salmon Berries. Those plants are looking weak because the old growth cedars block the light. But in an open area these plants thrive and have a soft raspberry like berry. Good to eat but too small to really be worth it. Nobody picks them.

They go upstream and die. There was only about 10 dead ones but they all die.

That’s a good point.

It’s a 45 km one way hike from the west kootenay’s of British Columbia to the East Kootenays. If you are familiar with it, Argenta to Panorama (sort of). Instead of a drop vehicle, Will and I did it both ways. A day and a half of old growth cedar forest

Once the bears start showing up it’s really cool. Lots of Bald Eagles too.

This kootenay lake/river merges with the Columbia River just south of here. This is coming down from the Kokanee glacier but filers quite fast. You can drink the water ( not during spawning or at spring runoff) but it’s nice and clean.

Forestry, WCB, and others moved to Kelowna or Victoria but demand for Nelson is high. I work at the post office and see where people are moving here from. Lots from Ontario, but US people and most other provinces are coming too.

We don’t have industry here. Work from home people bring their own job. Demand for the few homes that we have goes way up.

They gather at the creek mouth then work their way up laying eggs after flicking stones out to make a dip or hole. The males then fertilize the eggs. The fish will die afterwards. The crowd gathered because they are waiting to jump over a hard part.

Remote working is a big factor in all the rural home prices jumping. I have 3 friends that all bought out here and work remote in a different province.

That’s a big complaint in Nelson right now. House prices are high. But it’s definitely quieter than the Island.

They are delicious. These mushrooms only show up at this time of year. I’m definitely going to hunt for more.
September 2, 2025 at 12:54 PM
Fish numbers seem up this year so the bears will be loving it. Bald eagles and osprey too.

A scene similar to this is happening in all the creeks on this lake right now. It’s pretty cool for sure. This is flowing right through a campground. I wouldn’t walk my dog at night.

So far I haven’t seen a lot of bear poo so I think the bears are still up eating huckleberries. I only saw about 10 dead fish. Once the dead ones add up the bald eagles will gather and the bears will follow. Nothing better than sitting with a glass of wine watching bears lol.

They are ready to die so not good eating. But the bull trout and Gerrard Rainbow trout that wait where the river meets the lake can be huge, and they are worth catching.

You have likely been to Ainsworth Hot Springs then. This whole area is magical. Love it here.

I have a smoked salmon bagel every day for lunch! It’s my favourite. Not these old ones. They are beaten up and ready to die. But I also love smoked salmon. Yummy.
