Personally, I’m star-struck to learn that Zohran Mamdani’s mother is Mira Nair!!

(And how many mayoral candidates can say Denzel Washington held them as a baby?)
From a great 6/26/25 New York Times article on Mamdani’s parents with a lousy sub-headline: “Despite her earlier success, Ms. Nair, who is Indian and has featured Indian actors in her films, said she struggled to raise money to produce “Mississippi Masala” because potential financiers balked at its having no white characters. “The question that was asked for me was, ‘Can’t you make room for a white protagonist?’” Ms. Nair said, laughing. “I assured them that all the waiters in the film would be white.” She eventually raised several million dollars, enough to start production in Mississippi and Uganda, and cast Denzel Washington as the lead actor. Ms. Nair remembered seeing Mr. Washington holding Zohran when he was 3 months old, at a red carpet event for the movie.

Boston turned out to say #HandsOff our democracy, #NoKings. Took about an hour to get from this spot by the Bandstand over to Tremont Street to begin marching because of crowd size. That’s a distance of about 800 feet. Again, no cell service. @50501movement.bsky.social
