As we hit Spooky Season, I'm looking for any recs for books, pods, or YouTube videos that make for fun reading/listening! Some of the elements I love in my spooky fiction are: thick atmosphere, autumn vibes, slow-burning dread, cool monsters, supernatural mysteries, some degree of hopefulness.

Nowadays I mostly see the Berenstain Bears book where they play soccer in context of the humorously photoshopped cover, but the real book's premise is even funnier to me. It seems like a very classic trope, especially from the time: Dad loves sports, but has trouble connecting with kids' hobby (1/?)

There's nostalgia, and then there's the instrumental break of Tom Petty's Higher Place. I can't explain it...it's not even one of my top 5 songs on that album, but the way it transports me to 1995 is...powerful.

There's nostalgia, and then there's the instrumental break of Tom Petty's Higher Place. I can't explain it...it's not even one of my top 5 songs on that album, but the way it transports me to 1995 is...powerful.

Heard about an exciting opportunity from a small startup. The boss is a charismatic fellow. He says their "operation is small, but there's a lot of potential for aggressive expansion." Very polite, too, calling us candidates "fine gentlemen." You don't hear that in the hiring process nowadays.

One very specific, if trivial, oddity of growing up in '90s Michigan in a community where the vast majority of people had made the switch cable: Our rabbit-ears TV picked up Canadian broadcasting, and I got exposed to all these kids' shows that none of my peers had heard of.

For the first time since 2019, my Detroit Pistons will be hosting a playoff game. For the first time since 2008, they will be hosting a game while NOT being down in the series and huge underdogs. Ready for a hyped crowd!

There are these books about animals that my toddlers love ("I Wish I Were A [Insert Animal]"), and their angle is "here are these cool things about these animals, but here are weird/gross things they do that, overall, make me grateful I'm a human." And I feel like they misread/underestimate (1/?)

Happy Halloween! Arguably the most iconic spooky-adjacent song from video games is Vampire Killer, and choosing a favorite among its many versions is a challenge. For my money, I go with Rondo of Blood. It's just so aggressive, and the pauses perfectly build tension!

One thing I love about the classic Mega Man series is how there is no strong consensus on ranking. Growing up in the '90s and '00s, there seemed to be a few common favorites, but any lead in the rankings seems a lot more contested these days.

I'm so confused by last year's Goosebumps show. It seemed so uninterested in being a Goosebumps thing, other than the most surface-level of references. And for a property that traditionally barely ever included even the most basic of romances, the emphasis on parents having affairs and teens (1/?)
