What is wrong with St. Pauli?
I've analysed their statistics from the first nine Bundesliga games this season and compared them with last season's to see what's happened.

St. Pauli are already lacking one variation in order to attack a deep defensive line.

So, either the system needs to change again to make the main weapon i mentioned before more effective in terms of quality and quantity, or another attacking variation needs to be found. #fcsp

So, statistics suggest that having fewer forwards who love to dribble, or making the current ones dribble less often, doesn’t really benefit #fcsp.

Their attack has less variety and, defensively, they are still vulnerable due to losses the ball.

For context; I don’t mean #fcsp missing the exact players, just the type (archetype) of them were currently missing from the (available) squad.

In general, the number of dribbles, progressive runs, carries into the final third decreased compared to last season.

This could lead to the idea that #fcsp want to avoid losing the ball less often. However, their number of dispossessions has (still) increased.

Kaars or Pereira Lage obviously don't enjoy dribbling past opponents as much as their predecessors did (either for personal reasons or because of instructions from the coach).

Afolayan still lack of minutes this season to include to that list.

Nowadays, many teams are trying to solve the problem of facing a deep defensive line by using dribblers. However, #fcsp lack of this.

The decision to have less dribble-forward might hurt them for the sake of variation.
November 7, 2025 at 7:15 PM
One thing they often do as variations is crossing, which is not very effective. Their cross accuracy dropped badly to only 24.10%.

This is partly because #fcsp usually lacks players in the opponents' penalty box, especially when Danel Sinani plays as a false nine.
November 7, 2025 at 7:15 PM
Why the second is a big problem? Because with a deep defensive line, there is no space for #fcsp to exploit, and they are not good at facing a low block.

For example: Teams like #VfB and #SVW Bremen deepen their defensive work when they face #stpauli.
November 7, 2025 at 7:15 PM
There are various reasons why it feels like doesn’t work anymore.

Firstly, opponents already understand this style of play, making it predictable and easy to prevent.

Secondly, #fcsp now are good at pushing the opponent's line deeper and deeper this season, which is detrimental in this context.
November 7, 2025 at 7:15 PM
The recruitments support that, the signal was there, and first three games gave it promise.

However, things felt different after that.

Throughout the 9 Bundesliga games, only 14% of #fcsp’s total shots came from successfully attacking the space behind the opponent's defensive line.

But in this thread, i wanted to raise the topic of dribbling forwards, which i believe interesting to discuss.

To put context, it seems like #fcsp main attacking strategy this season is to exploit the space behind the opponent's defensive line with their pacey forwards.

We saw this vs #hsv.

Well, the article is a general comparison of St. Pauli's numbers with those from last season, which explains the system change and why they’re struggling to score.

As @timecksteen.bsky.social also addressed the topic of numbers on @millernton.de this week.

Hi, are you want to sell those 2 for Hoffenheim or it’s only for tauschen?
