Interesting! If I’m not mistaken, the English translation of the Bultmann-Heidegger correspondence should be out very soon, so this is great timing too

Also Benjamin and Derrida have the same birthday. I should organize a philosophy trivia night or something.

In the 1978 film The Candiate, where Redford plays a politician, you can see the full spectrum of tailoring language. Dark worsted suits, esp in pinstripes, call for neckwear. More casual jackets, such as tweed sport coats, can be worn with casual turtlenecks and chambray shirts.

To be clear, I’m not saying this song redeems the word “pollo” but surely “polla” is worse lol

Okay it’s true, pollo is not the most elegant word, HOWEVER, may I present as counterpoint: youtu.be/7x-Y0yvRwpc?...

I of course don’t think sciences flourished or anything—the Germans were flabbergasted to learn how much they’d been left in the dust when they found out at farm hall that the bomb had been dropped. Heisenberg thought they were ahead and were being detained to be debriefed about their research

I bring it up not just to be a history pedant but because I think the brain drain story taken on its own can feed into a kind of pre-established harmony idea about science and morality. Plenty of very smart scientists were either fellow travelers or happy enough to go along to get along!

Like Heisenberg and Weizsäcker and some other important physicists did stay and worked on the Uran-Projekt, but Germany just absolutely did not have the resources to allocate like the US did (cf Adam Tooze etc).
