did you know?

the idioms "balls to the walls" and "balls out", both meaning "with significant intensity" come not from a genital euphemism, but to aeronautics and steam engines, respectively?

also, unrelated to the real world stuff, there's something annoying about how Altered Carbon's main story thrust, all of the big driving issues, are ones that emerge out of a universe-internal fictitious technology, rather than a transposition of real world issues
when I watched Altered Carbon, I thought to myself that it was absurd that they would have all this sophisticated technology, AI, etc. and still force people to work shit jobs, pay for things, etc SURELY they'd create a Star Trek utopia

the last few years have changed my mind

I made a video sharing a bit about how you can use registration pins for laser cutting multi-layer parts that need alignment of features on multiple layers

if this is really what happened and isn't just business insider being vague this is incredible.

F/A-18 on landing approach out-maneuvers American air to air missile under ideal missile conditions, what an advertisement for the SuperHornet and what a funny way to reveal the SM-2 kinda sucks.

A better example: Nazi Germany itself had a brain drain.

The US sent a polymath baseball player as a spy on their atomic bomb program, with the goal of assassinating the heads if they were close.

They weren't, so Heisenberg wasn't assassinated.

Consider Max Born, forced by the nazis in 1933 as one of their very first acts in power to leave Gottingen and flee to Cambridge, along with basically all their other best physicists.

The Nazis' famous occultist weird science shit, happened because *a decade earlier* they'd destroyed all German science and education immediately upon gaining power.

Los Alamos happened in the US because that's where they'd exiled all their best physicists in 1933.

Fascists always embrace pseudoscience and snake oil and woo and quacks, because it always first attacks the concept of knowledge and expertise and objective reality.

Turns out, shooting all the experts on day one, creates a void for the most obviously ignorant dipshits you've ever seen to thrive.

even in defending bikes we use language that gives priority to cars

no, tiny cars aren't dangerous, nor are bikes

BIG cars are dangerous, and tiny cars and bikes are endangered
If tiny cars are too dangerous to be allowed on our streets, think of how it feels to be a pedestrian or cyclist!
Unlike Europe and Asia, NHTSA & Congress have failed to create a regulatory category for minicars. Because they flunk US safety rules for full-sized cars, they’re effectively illegal to sell.

Only “collectable” minicars cars 25+ years old can be legally sold (and they’re quite popular).

wide text is notorious difficult to read because it's hard to track from one line to the next and your eyes get lost scanning across it. if you're going to infodump, make the text a narrow column instead of a wide one. 10-15 words works best
I talk occasionally about how Electronic Warfare is actually pretty easy to understand, there just aren't any good explanations aimed at laymen, so here's a quick crash course in it I wrote last night on impulse:
