Pros:
-A+ world building

Cons:
-some character choices make no sense
-painfully hetero, obsessed with The Two Genders

So, I set out this semester to look more carefully for AI work. Some of it is quite easy to notice. The essays produced by ChatGPT, for instance, are soulless, boring abominations. Words, phrases and punctuation rarely used by the average college student — or anyone for that matter (em dash included) — are pervasive.

It’s time to build the pump station To the editor: We at Grassroots Alexandria are concerned with the pushback against the waterfront pump station, part of the broader Waterfront Flood Mitigation Project. This station is part of the city’s decade-long plan in fighting what all of us who live here know to be a reality: Alexandria has a flooding issue that’s not getting better. Opponents of the pump station ignore how the station will reduce flooding on seven streets, including King Street. They also do not provide feasible alternatives and instead recommend installation of temporary flood barriers, mobile pumps and new drainage infrastructure, which do not address the scale of flooding from the Potomac River, especially from over-topping of the embankments and tidal backflow into the sewer system. The city has already proactively worked with businesses and residences to find effective solutions and has engaged designers to develop the multipurpose space. The city determined the pump’s proposed location and design would reduce risks, costs and delays of 18 to 24 months compared to four other locations considered. The city has followed all necessary steps to execute this project for several years. Urging the city to delay the project further to re-examine alternatives is a waste of time – up to four years – and a waste of taxpayer dollars, up to $45 million. The pump station promises a future where the historic heart of Alexandria is above water. We must not forego long-term benefits for short-term distractions and make poor decisions that will impact generations of Alexandrians to come. -Moira MacDougal, on behalf of Grassroots Alexandria
