while I’m being cranky, access journalism needs to go. When the president does his “I’m alpha because I insulted you” thing somebody needs to fall on his sword and say “what the fuck is wrong with you, old man?” on a hot mic. the hero of the wizard of Oz is Toto.

Now, on the moors where the guns bring down
The predestinated birds,
Shrill, wavering cries pass
Like the words of an international peace;
And I would that these cries were heard in every town,
Astounding the roar of the wheel
And the lying mouth of the news…

This was a great Sunday read.
“There is a stereotype of the impatient, intolerant, antisocial proprietor and it seems (on the whole) to be true. There are exceptions of course, and many booksellers do not conform to this type. Sadly, I do.”

On 1st August, Lammas is kept as the loaf-mass, when the first bread from new grain is blessed in thanks for harvest. The field poppy (Papaver rhoeas), an August birth flower, is sacred to Demeter, Greek goddess of harvest, symbolising enduring love, remembrance, and consolation.

Mystery solved: these bulbs are actually leucojum, not, paperwhite narcissus, as I discovered when one of them finally sent up a single pathetic little bell. I've now planted them outside with others of their tribe. Location of the paperwhites is still a mystery. I really am a #shitgardener.
A pot of paperwhite narcissus, now 5 months old. Won't die, won't grow, just mocking me. 🌱 2/3

Before the holidays, I potted up 9 pots of bulbs, envisioning lots of cheerful flowers over winter. I've done this before, but got unusually bad results this time. First, this one --picture taken today. Pretty enough, but rather overshadowed by everything blooming in the garden outside 🌱 1/3

What a terrific piece! A great read. The "mystery" theme reminds me of those pincushions I've seen in museums that were given to expectant/new mothers, which have the words "welcome little stranger."

Thank you! That's a good one. I used to see a lot more poetry from various sources on here than I do now, and I miss seeing it.
The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.

Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

In 1862, a Union soldier found cigars wrapped in a piece of paper in a field of clover. The paper was a copy of Confederate Gen. Lee's invasion orders. The Southern sloppiness helped the Union stop Lee at Antietam.
It's unknown who lost the orders in the field, or if he was related to Pete Hegseth.
