Chemical Biologist. Loves probes, hates TB.
I showed my daughter my latest TLC results (lipid analysis in mycobacteria). I explained how the "fats" are separated. Then we did a little experiment so she could understand. So many skittles eaten before breakfast...

The US awards the Medal of Honor "to recognize American soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, guardians, and coast guardsmen who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor." Curious fact. Only 1 woman (of 3547) has been awarded it: Mary Edwards Walker. And the US tried to take hers back.

My family had purple cauliflower for dinner. The cooking water turned purple (because of anthocyanine). Then... I amazed my family with how the purple water acts as a pH indicator. Ta-dah!
Check out the pretty colors!

Just finished reading this great book by @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social. I learned a lot and found it to be an excellent read. As a TB researcher, I am struck over and over again by how critical effective diagnosis and treatment are. TB kills over a million people EVERY YEAR. Fund TB research!

Interesting graphic from the WSJ:
Bill Gates is a notable billionaire because he intends to spend his fortune during his life, largely on global health. Looks like he still has a long way to go, keep it up!

Roald Dahl was an outspoken advocate for the measles vaccine because his 7 yo daughter Olivia died from a measles infection. He published "Measles: A dangerous illness," to encourage children to be vaccinated. Read essay here:

Today I completed jury duty service for Washington County (Oregon). A very pleasant experience and felt like an unexpected vacation day. Um... what does that say about being an academic right now?

The current measles outbreak is a clear indicator of the incompetence of Kennedy and the Trump administration. 20% of measles cases include hospitalization. This is a highly contagious, deadly, VACCINE-PREVENTABLE disease. MAHA? I wish.

Freezing funding for USAID already made the TB epidemic much worse. TB kills >1.2 million people a year (most deadly infectious disease). Loss of US funds has halted progress in Kenya- patients are no longer getting proper dx or treatment. Pic courtesy of @nytimes.com (Otieno).

This morning I'm thinking of Marty Goddard, who invented the first "Rape Kit" (1970s). The kit standardized collection of evidence and is still used today.
*In keeping with long tradition, a man got the credit for this invention after Goddard conceived of the idea, shared it, and advocated for it.

I am torn between deep sadness and embarrassment that I didn't know who Gertrude Elion was until 10 minutes ago. Elion is a nobel-prize winning biochemist/pharmacologist who developed amazing drugs (anti-virals; anti-cancers) to benefit humanity. Thank you Elion for your contributions!

My lab has a new pre-print on bioRxiv: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
This paper examines proteomic change in Mtb in response to carbon starvation. We describe the effect of CS on drug targets (see Figure 5).
