All the edits I need to do today are the boring kind (add transition, clarify logistics etc) and I'm trying not to procrastinate here and on ao3 but. it's not really working

Thread on how to detect ai in that viral dog video
Yeah, I mean, I'm critical of any video nowadays that is trying to elicit an emotional response, especially when it's asking for subs at the end. It's weird that all the people seem to end up with the dog they want. And shelters are overflowing, where are the rooms full of people wanting to adopt?

Been going back and forth in my mind about it since I saw the news last night and have concluded that, yes, I do expect organisations to stand up and fight transmisogynistic legal challenges - even if it means that organisation ceases to exist.

Financial precarity. Yes university students have always been living on their last 20 bucks, but the number of students I talk to now who have *multiple* jobs in addition to being fulltime students, some of whom are taking care of family members' survival needs as well as their own, is shocking. 5/

this is part of a discussion about using AI art in your presentation slides, but also feels like it captures where this all goes wrong.

people who don't see the visuals as communication can't respect the skill & thought of the artists whose work got fed into these models to begin with.
Yes! Visuals are part of the communication. Treating them as ignorable decoration completely misses the point and it’s not how they’re received by an audience

Anyway shout out to my wildly talented friends who released books out this year. @kvalentinwrites.bsky.social's AMATEUR WITCH'S GUIDE TO MURDER is delightfully dark and so very funny and @jennihowell.bsky.social's BOYS WITH SHARP TEETH is twisted obsession at its finest
My favourite problem to have is that so many of my friends are now published authors that I have too many books to choose from while buying gifts for other friends and family

If you think that the current state of trans healthcare in the UK is because of concern or caution, I'd encourage you to think again.

It's not medically informed, it's a reactionary response to transphobic bigotry whipped up into a frenzy over the past few years.

And it costs lives.

King shit (gender-neutral).
I heard a story about a female academic giving a paper at the IHR who, after receiving a long and aggressive question from a senior male professor, simply leaned back with her hands behind her head and replied “Oh, do fuck off.”
One of my colleagues went to a seminar at Berkeley and when someone asked a question Derrida brushed it off saying ‘what you ask may be important but it is not interesting’.

I am not aware of a single author who has a shortage of book ideas. Words, yes. Ways to make the ideas become a book, yes. But I've never met an author who doesn't have ideas just raining down all the damn time.

One way I have found to mourn someone is to set up a monthly sustaining donation to a mutual aid effort they cared about. If you can join me in honoring Alice Wong, @sfdirewolf.bsky.social with a sustaining donation today, please do. Thank you Alice, and I will not let the bastards grind me down.

Alice Wong was one of the most effective people challenging the Whiteness of disability communities and its many flaws, but who believed fiercely in us as a community, in disabled people as oracles.

Alice brought so much to so many of us, it’s hard to measure the kind of gratitude I have for that.

There are people you never have the honor of knowing but you feel the ripple effects of their person and their work from the folks who have met them.

Alice Wong made waves that went far. A tremendous loss. Memory eternal.
The incredible, indomitable, inspirational Alice Wong has left us.

I'm so grateful to have known her on social media, and so grateful for all the words she shared with us and all the actions she encouraged us into making.

May we live up to her example.

It really is annoying how much this works (when writing fiction, in my case. For academic writing, it's crisps that do it for me. for some reason)
Absolutely devastating for my blood sugar levels that when I simply cannot persuade myself to write something ove been procrastinating the only thing that works is to buy a big bag of haribo and eat it at my desk as I type, getting more and more antsy and typing faster and faster as the sugar hits.
