More Japanese dines! First taste took me from "oh?" To "oh!" Pretty fast. Packed can. Fish has some muddy, earthy flavor that plays well with the bitter yuzu. The butter gives it a creamy mouth feel. Interesting can.

These sardines! From Japan! Jeremy's brother sent me a bunch of japanese fish to try. The tin is not very full. Fish are well cleaned and have a fatty, oily flavor, with an earthy aftertaste. Lacks salt. Texture is soft, but the fish has some structure and it flakes a bit. Interesting!

Trader Joe's lightly smoked salmon

Lacks flavor and the meat is a bit tough. Needed a pinch of salt. Id avoid it and get their trout next time.

Trader Joe's smoked trout
Flakey, solid fish. Has that metallic smoke taste, like Riga gold. Fish texture is a little soft but it'd be great on a bagel. Some parts of the filet are thick and feel dry bc they don't get as much oil w each bite. Overall, solid option, especially at ~$4

Sardinha sardines in olive oil with oregano

I was so disappointed by these I almost didn't want to review them. Mushy fish, scales and fins left on, no oregano flavor. Such a disappointment.

Most of my fish money has been going to populating the canned fish advent calendar I'm making for my sister but I wanted to share an update on my canned fish shadow box. I'm hoping to replace a few to get some more color on there but I'm so happy with how it looks now that it's full.

wkone smoked oysters, habanero hots over leftover rice and topped with furikake.
The smoke flavor was intense, and the seafood taste was so robust. It made me feel like I was in a seaside town. I'm not the biggest fan of canned shellfish but each one was large, meaty, and clean tasting.

Agromar spider crab paté

Eaten on homemade focaccia

SO FISHY!! Has a bit of STANK to it. overwhelming!! I drizzled some chili crisp and made a sandwich and that helped w the funk but it's so rich, idk if I could eat more than two spoonfuls in a sitting. I'd put it on a charcuterie board tho.

El Corte Inglés Signature stuffed European squid with ink

Souvenir from Spain. They're meaty, very oily, but a creaminess behind that. They're a bit much plain, but I'd try them over rice.

I don't have many thoughts. I wish I liked it more, but it's a generic grocery store brand so 🤷‍♀️

Genova yellow fin tuna in calabrian chili oil

Very fragrant - spicy, fishy aroma filled the room as soon as I opened the tin. Mixed with some mayo to eat. Has a decent level of heat. Fish is a bit dry, but in the way tuna usually is. Seems like a reliable flavored can for lunches.

Fishwife smoked salmon with chili crispy

Ahh... controversial fishwife. The smell and color of this fish is unreal. Mild heat, mild sweetness. Fish is super firm - would hold up great in onigi or a sandwich. Fly by jing makes very savory chili crisp and it plays well with uber smoked fish.

Patagonia provisions, lemon olive Spanish white anchovies in evoo.

Firm filets. The lemon and olive flavor was surprisingly pronounced. You get the olive flavor very strongly - it's not my favorite. I ate them over crackers while a baby stared at me and cried because fish is his favorite food.

Ati Manel garfish in olive oil

Incredibly gorgeous skinny filets. Generously packed can (6 filets, 2 layers). Held their shape very well, Id describe them as stiff. Great flavor, smokey and fishy with some earthiness to it, and sufficiently salty. Id try more garfish from this conserva for sure :)

Patagonia provisions Spanish paprika mackerel

I made breakfast but had a few bites of the fish and couldn't eat anymore. It had this bitter, off taste I couldn't handle. Not rot but something gross about it. Maybe I shouldn't have fried them? Really disappointed 😔
