LOL - that's so great. At the time, I wouldn't have appreciated it nearly as much as I do now.

Turns out Winsor McKay was doing it in Little Nemo. This is a more famous example from 1908, but the guy was doing these polyptychs three years earlier in the strip. Just boundless imagination!

Jake Parker has a very clear and simple shop (shop.mrjakeparker.com). I'm guessing he uses a Squarespace template, but I'm not sure.

Now if only I could find the first use of it. Going to hit my Spirit reprints to see what I can find.
