What would happen if the city set out to build subsidized housing—or a stock of rent-capped housing—because developers aren’t doing it? That would make some lemonade, I’d guess.

Trump’s order does not do that, because he doesn’t have that authority. Congress and the courts have established “disparate impact,” and Trump can’t undo that. As soon as his minions try to act on that Executive Order, the courts will strike him down—again.

I think we a blame Alexander Hamilton. Back in the beginning, the only way the federal government could raise the money to run the government was through tariffs and import fees. I think the ability to place tariffs on imports goes back to those days.
