finally a clear strategy coming out of Netflix’s gaming business.

Netflix announced that it will focus on 4 pillars: narrative games, multiplayer party games, games for kids, and "mainstream" releases.

honestly i’m here for the trend of hollywood + other streaming services embracing video game adaptations.

we’ve seen some killer movies/shows like The Last of Us, Castlevania, Detective Pikachu, and Arcane.

while style isn’t protected under current copyright law, i can see arguments for why it should be... artists spend their whole lives developing a unique style that makes them marketable—isn’t this what should be protected?
The idea of an animation studio owning copyright on a “style” as opposed to specific character or story elements isn’t how copyright works.

While it’s reasonable to argue if OpenAI training on Studio Ghibili’s works is fair use, creating images in their styke isn’t intellectual property theft.

i think this announcement highlights a strategic move from Nintendo to encourage more digital purchases (which has higher margins) and crack down on secondary markets that resell their physical game cards

a great example of a product that failed to specialize and innovate with the market. Skype was always doing too much (like comeon landline calls??) and completely missed the video conferencing train during the pandemic

but shoutout to u Skype for pioneering the space. lost but never forgotten

while i don’t think AI should be integrated in every single piece of tech now, i do see the benefits in a queer chatbot, esp for those earlier in their coming out process

whether this tech should be a part of Grindr is different question… a matter of user data and privacy.

big bet with potentially big payoffs. this move from Stripe will help it stay competitive with other payment providers like PayPal and Visa. this acquisition will also supercharge stablecoin adoption, enabling faster cross border transactions (esp important for conflict-affected areas!!)

absolutely bonkers to think about how generative world models will change the entertainment landscape in the next few years. we’d see incredibly immersive worlds, top tier AAA games (coming from small devs), and more playable/watchable content than ever before
