Discussing Christianity, science, and sometimes philosophy (mind & epistemology) on the internet.

Pandeist. God-fearer. Ex-Christian.
Oh, man it's going to suck to get the lake of fire and sulfur for being cowardly.

You are too scared of being tortured to death by the state, and verbally say you aren't Christian, so you get even worse treatment after death as a result.

If "I believe" is defined as "I am acting as if" then you can believe something you aren't confident in but hope is true.

I also think this aligns well with common usage of the word "believe".

As I get older, I really appreciate a nice little sleepy town.

French are definitely superior here
Where the English might say 'It's the bee's knees', the French say 'C'est le petit Jésus en culotte de velours' (It's the baby Jesus in velvet shorts).

If pre-determinism is true, then I was pre-determined to not believe in pre-determinism 🤷‍♂️

A small part of me really wants to listen to this just because conservative women attitudes are really mysterious to me, but the rational part of me knows that this would add nothing of real value to my life.

I think I became a Christian in my dream last night, btw.

I remember thinking "oh my god, it all makes sense!" and I remember it had something to do with a part of the Lord's prayer, but I can't remember for the life of me what part of the prayer it was and how my thought process went.

Lay-person Christianity sounds way more fun than orthodox Christianity.

Much more vibes-based. Way less systematic.

I could never.

I'm convinced that there is a certain type of person who insists on a guru or a prophet.

Without another human that has privileged divine access, they are unable to find hope.

Among the list of gurus and prophets currently available for following, Jesus is not nearly the worst option.

It's amazing how undisciplined I am when my wife isn't around.

And she doesn't ask me to do anything either. I just feel like I should be better when someone else is home

It's a real bummer to me when posts like this don't allow comments OR quotes. I wanted to commiserate and add my own experiences with my parents.

Was working in Google Sheets and accidentally set up a circular reference, then realized that I wish we had this for our rational thoughts.

A cell for each word and our definition of the word with bright red flags for the crazy amount of circularity in our definitions.

Quote tweeting myself to add a very important note that "critical commentaries" *is* a form of "taking other people's word for it".

But it's generally a credible people who actually know the manuscript evidence, unlike the average pastor / priest.
How many layers of trust are between you and God? How many humans are you trusting to speak for God?

Most don't realize how many humans they are giving the authority of God too. Not just the biblical authors, but many additional layers of interpreters too.

@pfrazee.com

I'm desperate for some types of posts from people I follow to show up more often in my discover feed, but since they never show up I can't click "ahow more like this" on my feed. Can there be a "show more like this in my discover feed" button even outside the feed?

There has been something I very much desired for years that I've been praying for intermittently. It ended up happening during a time when I wasn't praying. Trying not to read to much into it.

Did you hear about the guy who only believed 12.5% of the Bible?

He was an eighthiest.

There are 3 ways that events can happen in existence. They can either be (1) determined to happen "by law", they can be (2) undetermined and entirely uniformly random, or they can be (3) random, but within a non-uniform distribution that is set "by law".

I can't conceive of a 4th option.

I wonder how often people who say "it was meant to be" reflect on what that means for their free will?
