First thing I thought of when I saw this post was all of the badge related genius work by folks that happens at Defcon every year, which is absolutely overkill for what you were talking about.

Bill Budge's Pinball Construction Set was a good one, definitely made iterating designs easier than the physical pinball I tried building as a kid.
