Hooray for @macey.bsky.social and what is going to be an epic addition to the historical fantasy genre, I will sell a kidney if it gets 2027 here faster (haha jk but really)
We’re excited to announce the acquisition of @macey.bsky.social 's BLOOD OF QUEENS, a gothic historical fantasy featuring Tudor-inspired court intrigue, necromancy, and an audacious heist. For fans of M. A. Carrick’s The Mask of Mirrors and Holly Race's Six Wild Crowns, this hits shelves Spring ’27!

Curtailing people’s ability to read widely and carefully, to locate, assess, and compare different sources for themselves, and to write in their own voice about what they find and what it means, is arguably more effective than censorship. It is also one of the most obvious effects of generative AI.

I know everything is terrible, but Hugo nominations are up and now I have so much reading to do ❤️

I'm feeling a bit conflicted about Nanowrimo this morning. I walked away after the combined AI statement + moderator abuse scandal, but it feels weird. I hoped they'd sort themselves out.

This is...extremely disturbing. What is someone who is not a UK citizen but has books published in the UK able to do? Asking for me.
The full report by the Tony Blair Institute is out, in which they detail how copyright should be "rebooted" in the AI age. It reads like a big tech lobbying document. I hope they will be asked serious questions at its launch in London today.

Some very brief highlights:

Apparently there is an Eid party at my kid's kindergarten today. I found this out because she wanted to wear the celebratory mask and hat she got at another kid's birthday party. She is living her best life, and now I want a party hat.

My 4yo asked me what my favorite monster is. I said gorgon and told her a little bit about Medusa.

A few minutes later she spins me a whole story about how some "argons" visited her in the night. They seem like cool people.

Having a kid means I can read books to her that always made me curious - as well as books that were my fave! Can't wait for the redwall years but I have the feeling she'll love warrior cats.
I've had so many people tell me I missed out by not reading the Warrior Cats books when they first started, and I keep thinking I should at least check them out. But I was a Redwall kid (who found Redwall after already reading Watership Down at, like, 8) and that's a tough act to follow, ngl.

Black History Month was started by Carter Woodson, who lived in DC and whose home is a national historic place.
Originally Negro History Week, then Negro History Month.

Woodson chose February b/c both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays are in February

i think it is important to say that the open and explicit racism of the president and the vice president isn’t just uncouth or “controversial” but a direct attack on tens of millions of americans and a dereliction of their duty to represent the entire country

I have found the secret to getting my child to play by herself. It is asking her if she wants to do something she definitely wants to do, then telling her that means we have to get clothes on and brush our teeth before we go.

I was so glad to read this. I previously disabled AI and because of that Word wouldn't engage copilot when I clicked on it (hooray) but now I've switched to the classic no ai subscription.
Microsoft is going to price gouge you by adding their genAI to your subscription without your consent, and they are not transparent about how to avoid this bullshit.

Here's how to change your subscription back to "Classic" for a lower charge without Copilot: answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffi...

I'm editing my book and I just have to say I believe in it so hard it hurts.

If I ever finish this monster it's going to be amazing.

I bought this and I love it. The illustrations are so inventive and detailed and beautiful.
Can I show you this:
The Dragon Journals is a little book that I put together very early in my self-reinvention as an illustrator. It’s a simple, but honest little thing, and it was an important step for me. 100% hand-drawn, just an HB pencil and paper.

I was being too stupid during this morning's "Search and Find" book reading so my daughter just told me to find something, took my finger, and put it on the picture.

I'm not sure who's winning this game.

This explains why conservative fear-mongering is such an easy play in America.

— Ppl believe Black ppl make up 41% of the nation (real number 12%)

Yall I cannot stop you from selling your books to AI, but a 50/50 split for $2500, non-negotiable? Absolutely not, friends. You deserve better, you are worth more. Tell those billionaires to pound sand.

But since you’re here… ffs don’t sell your books to AI.
