Moi circa 1977-80: B&W photo of a Caucasian male, early 20’s, dark (brown) collar length “Bee Gees” wavy hair, wispy beard, acetate frame glasses, horizontal striped shirt, sitting on the floor in front of a couch, bare right knee exposed, making a V “peace sign” with the left hand, slightly blurred due to longer low light exposure. Most likely lightly stoned at any given time in those daze.

An older gentleman smokes a cigar outdoors in the twilight with mist on a meadow behind him, referencing the cloud of cigar smoke nearly obscuring his bespectacled face. I had to give up this place, and as a result the cigars are a rarity now, but every now and then, such as that particular evening, the Cosmic forces would align, and life seemed worth all the bother.

Pencil sketch self-portrait on Bristol paper done while house sitting for my friend this past summer: male with white hair, moustache, and goatee, wearing glasses in bright morning sunlight. Kelly and I were neighbors and for about 10 years and continue as friends after I sold the farm when it no longer served my purposes. She left me half a dozen pre-rolled joints for taking care of her chickens, cats, and dog while she was away.

Monochrome Monday 📷: B&W of He Liyi taken at his cultural exchange cafe' in Dali, Yunnan Provence, China, and my autographed copy of his book "Mr. China' Son", a read which I highly recommend. He's been on my mind for ever since 11/5/24 for some reason.... Alt Text for more details.
Elderly Chinese Bai minority gentlemen at a table surrounded by American College Students listening intently as they discuss his book "Mr. China's Son" at his Cultural Exchange Cafe in Dali China, June 1998. He was educated as an English Teacher just as Chinese politics swung toward the Soviet Union, and subsequently sent to a labor camp during the Cultural Revolution, all documented, in English, in his book. It was a great privilege to meet him. Reads in part "I welcome you to my store. I'm very happy to have you as a friend, but my English level is still limited. Wish you happy all the way. Your friend." I asked him if he was bitter or angry about having been imprisoned, denigrated, and forced into labor by the Chinese authorities of his own native land, essentially having half his adult life stolen from him by the Government. He made a gesture as if brushing away a fly, laughed, and replied (paraphrasing here after 26 years): "Oh no, no; I forgive them all a long time ago. You can't live like that." I found his attitude rather astonishing at the time, but the older I get, the more I understand it.
