murktide regent is a threat that requries some real build-around, especially so in the old izzet builds where you had to cast the guy while maintaining delirium. but when he lands, he's just gonna hit hard and be a little evasive. it's like a modern take on tarmogoyf. it's masterful.

surprise, this is a thread that lets me talk about why murktide regent is my favorite Modern Horizons card. a lot of my beef with the frog and the eye is that they're both this but way more overtuned. murktide is powerful, extremely so--but it's just a beater. 2 mana 8/8 flier. that's all you need.

the fact that these both see play in the same deck makes sense, and it's interesting seeing Unearth be so good all of a sudden, but man. all this together makes for a truly miserable experience on the receiving end. unearthing an oculus as early as turn 2 makes me feel like i'm putting down a dog.

i really don't like this thing. but it IS a card from a new standard set seeing play, which is nice, and the standard deck built around it is cool. it's also surreal playing around manifested cards in MODERN. i just hate the play patterns on this guy. please make him four mana. or something.

froggy here is a VERY difficult card to play optimally. you don't really realize it until you sit down and play with it. there's a lot more going on under the hood here and it's pretty intense. it's a card that rewards good players with forethought. few designs are both this good and this intricate.

then there was the boros deck. tokens and burn and such. this was my first real deck, the one that got me to where i am today. i may rebuild this deck someday because i love it so much

eventually i landed on two-ish decks that really stuck around. i'll cover the one that no longer really exists first. a simic ramp deck that sought to power out my singular copy of worldspine wurm. i don't like simic play patterns much but i remember this deck very fondly

so for like all of highschool i was just working with what i had from like 6-7 years before. one of my worst deck ideas was this, my first attempt at a combo deck. it was not successful. sticks in my mind though. it was cute. alt text explains it if you don't see it
