This! I've been saying/thinking basically this since around 2017.
Trump is canny. He knows how 'the system' works & how to game it to his advantage. He is not smart, but he's not a complete idiot.
There's a lot of similarity in popular perception to him and, say, Boris Johnson.

Observing Trump and Starmer yesterday, I was struck by the notion Trump is clever but not smart. He isn't stupid but is seriously uneducated beyond his frame of reference - pursuit of wealth and ego gratification. He knows far too little history, geography, and sociology to be a world-class leader.
