If you can't get in to read this, it essentially says that Trump has isolated the US from the post-WW2 world that the US built and all of its allies have already begun to strength their ties in the new world, for better or for worse.

I tend to be more optimistic than many about how far the EU/UK and Canada alone can contain Russian aggression but far more pessimistic than most about how badly they would be hit by fallout from an America Crisis
I was asked by @nataliebrender.bsky.social where my usual instinct for optimism stood in this historical moment (I do believe a degree of whiggish optimism is an important component of secular morality). My initial answer was “in the basement.”

On reflection, I offered this perverse case for hope:

Northern brook lamprey. Unlike sea lamprey, these little guys are vegetarians and pose no threat to fish. But lampricide kills them too, so TBFN is working with Dept of Fisheries and Oceans to keep it from reaching up rivers and streams that empty in to Lake Superior.
